Talking Redskins News

It's being reported that Joe Gibbs has accepted a 5 year deal to coach the Redskins again. Wow! I can't believe it, and can't wait until training camp opens. It's also being reported that he's already hired Joe Bugel as offensive line coach (deja vu all over again), and a defensive coordinator - not Richie Pettibone.

Anyone at all familiar with this area knows that Coach Gibbs is a living legend. Politics is second fiddle to the Redskins in this town, and the master violinist returns!

Coach Gibbs gives back to the community as well. His Youth Life Ministries group, hope I got the name right, has a campus here in Prince William County, and they've helped countless boys and girls.

This is a great day for the return of Professional Football with the Washington Redskins. Can't wait until Dallas week- which Coaches George Allen and Tom Landry popularized !

Jay, Congrats to you and Redskins fans everywhere! Joe Gibbs is truly one of the good guys and class acts - both in the NFL and NASCAR.

Gibbs and Parcel together in the NFC East, am I in a time warp or what?

Maybe, but won't the anticipation the week before be truly exciting again! Two masters in a face-off, life is good again!

I grew up watching Joe Gibbs win 3 Super Bowls with the Redskins and I'm thrilled that he's back -- I just hope his return doesn't turn into a flop like with Michael Jordan and the Wizards and Jaromir Jagr with the Capitals...

Those of us who've followed the Baltimore Orioles over the years also recall the brief return of Earl Weaver as manager in 1985-86, which turned out to be a flop or, certainly, disappointing in terms of winning results (sub-.500). Even the great Earl of Baltimore could not help the Orioles team he inherited regain its winning form.

Then again, to many folks, Earl seemed to have lost some of the fiery temperament and maybe the will to win that characterized his Hall of Fame managerial career during the Orioles' "Glory Years." No doubt, he inherited a bunch of players who didn't measure up to many of those on past teams. Plus, the club was under "new ownership" that was over-controlling, uptight, and making unwise moves in a desperate attempt to produce the winner of past years.

But a big difference between Gibbs and Weaver may be that Gibbs stayed competitive on the racing circuit during his "retirement," still racking up wins and enjoying success. (Weaver reluctantly left Florida and the golf course after many entreaties from the Oriole's new owner.) Gibb's heart really seems in it; plus, he was able to negotiate a lot of control over the team from an owner who was ready to defer to Gibb's magic (and judgment) in rediscovering how to win.

I'm not really a Skins fan, but it'll be fun to watch how "Joe Gibbs--the Sequel" plays out.

I was one of the 90,098 fans at FedEx Field last Sunday for the regular season opener of the Redskins and the return of Coach Gibbs...

It's nice to see Joe back on the sidelines. I predicted before the start of last season that the 'Skins would go 5-11, and I hit it right on the money. I'm thinking they'll go 7-9 this season. We'll see in a couple of months.

I'm hoping it's a good year for Joe Gibbs:

1. NFL: NFC Championship (Super Bowl might be a long shot)

2. NASCAR: Nextel Cup Championship for Tony Stewart

Kemo, I bet you had a fantastic time at FedEx Field last Sunday!

Whereas I can't really claim to be a Skins fan (in my neck of the woods, our hearts left with the B'more Colts that dreadful nite), I recognize that Joe Gibbs has always been a class act and I have to wish him and the team well.

But, based on what I hear from those who at least claim to be knowledgeable, it might be best for Skins fans to rein in their expectations a bit, esp. this first year *. (Rome wasn't built in.....well, you know.) And Snyder needs to keep his fingers out of the pie, too.
_________
* Can't help but think of all the hopes that rode on Earl Weaver's return as manager of the B'more Orioles some years back. Even the Great Earl of Baltimore with his Hall of Fame credentials couldn't return the magic to that team. (Though I grant you, those "O's"were probably further gone than this present Redskins franchise!)

I agree, Ziploc, that my expectations are kind of high for the Skins -- I was with them through thick and thin during Gibbs Era I and saw the great things that he did -- and after two seasons with Steve Spurrier's Fun & Gun, well, I'll just leave it at that!!!

It's amazing how exciting a Joe Gibbs team is running a Marty Schottenheimer offense, isn't it.

"But Senator, Joe Gibbs is our friend. We know Joe Gibbs, and Marty S. is no Joe Gibbs."

The amazing thing about Joe Gibbs is that he won three Lombardi Trophies with three different quarterbacks:

Super Bowl XVII: Joe Theismann
Super Bowl XXII: Doug Williams
Super Bowl XXVI: Mark Rypien

And he won two NASCAR championships with two different drivers:

Winston Cup 2000: Bobby Labonte
Winston Cup 2002: Tony Stewart
