Default Anybody Know Anything About Lee Mazzilli?

It's probably only widely known among Orioles and perhaps Yankees fans, but former Yankees bench coach Lee Mazzilli was recently named Manager of the Baltimore Orioles, replacing Mike Hargrove. He is someone almost totally unfamiliar to O's fans. But, even the sin of coming from the Yankees will be forgiven by long-suffering O's fans if he can get this club winning again.

Does anybody have an opinion of Mazzilli or know how he was viewed in New York? I hope he's not just a good talker who managed to BS his way ahead of some other promising managerial candidates. He has no major league managing experience, though the fact he got to observe Joe Torre can only be considered a plus.

While I'm at it--about the Orioles--I do think this may be the year they finally obtain an impact free agent or two. Between Mazilli and some bonafide talent, let's see if this club can move out of the doldrums and begin the climb to being able to pose some serious competition for the Yankees and Red Sox again. (Owner) Angelos, pls. stay out of the way!

From what I understand, Lee Mazzilli is well thought of in the New York area. He played many years for the Mets during many of their down years. I believe he was being groomed to replace Joe Torre in the next year or two when he leaves the Yankees. Lee has paid his dues, he managed in the minors for 3 years and then became the Yankee first base coach. I hear he is a hard worker and was thought of highly by his fellow coaches and players. I think the Orioles made a good choice and with a few good rookies or free agents you will be right back in the race.

I think Mazilli will do a good job, given the man he will work for. The best thing Peter Angelos can do for the Orioles is sell them to a baseball fan. Great organization, great history, great park, lousy owner...kind of like the Yankees.

Please, not that. The Redskins are owned by a football fan, and look at how that's working out.

Sorry. How about a fan who knows enough to leave baseball to the baseball people in the organization?

Make that a very rich fan who knows enough to etc.........

Or....here's an interesting thought: how about a very rich former baseball star by the name of Cal Ripken someday taking the reins of ownership?
Could, would, or should a very rich baseball person who is also a fan leave baseball to the baseball people in the organization? (With his money at stake?)

[Actually, it's more likely that Cal would become GM, hopefully (for his sake) in the post-Angelos era. Looking down the road a few years, watch for Ripken to become Orioles manager, once his kids are grown and out of the house.]

IMO great players seldom become good coaches/GMs/owners etc......the good coaches/GM/owners etc are the average players...probably because they understand more how the majority of players play....

I am sure you DC are guys remember a basketball owner/GM called MJ (to prove my point)

Oooh boy, I take no position on the matter, but I do know that them's fightin' words for many die-hard "Skins" fans around DC.

Actually, what about making the name officially the "Skins," since I hear them called that by many of the faithful anyway!

Jeez, here I am contributing to THREADDRIFT from my own thread.....

I dont know is "skins" would be offensive or not (have to be in the shoes of the Native Americans to fully understand the hurt) .....I do know for a fact that "redSkins" is a derogatory term.....(unlike the college teams named after actual tribe names)

Actually, the O's have managed to finish ahead of bottom-dweller Tampa Bay in the AL East every season thus far. But your point is made, kemo!

(Never mind the fact the O's can't beat TB in head-to-head competition!)
