Default Marlins vs Yankees

Well like I said before, not much of a baseball fan, but guess who got tickets to tonight's (Tuesday) game. The reason I got them was because before I can get engaged, I need to ask my future father-in-law for his permission and blessing (I'm old fashion). He is a HUGE Marlin's fan, but was unfortunate not to get a set of tickets because he was at work and of course trying to get them from ticketmaster online was a joke. Well a friend of mine pulled some strings and got me 2 tickets to tomorrow nights game. I don't think he would have said no to me before, but how can he say I can't marry his daughter now that I got him World Series tickets

So hopefully everything will go well and we will be by the end of the night.

Now I just have to figure out how to ask him.

I will keep you all updated tomorrow night when I get home.

How? The Marlins could lose and he'd blame it on you. Sports fans are not rational people. That's why Red Sox fans want Grady Little's head in a jar, and that guy from Chicago has police guarding his house.

Sorry I can't wish you luck, but I hope you have fun.

FLPilot, I'll be pulling for the Marlins to win tonight! If your [future] father in law really gets in a snit over a poor showing by his team, you might consider delaying the question. How about over dinner at his favorite restaurant?

Well, I did it! I asked him before the game and as you can see he was still invited to the game with me. Of course he said yes and we had a blast. Although it poured down on us (and we lost), we still had fun soaking wet. The picture below is of us before we got wet.

FLPilot: Well, if the Marlins are going to be be making it to the World Series on a regular basis, they definitely rate a new air conditioned stadium with a retractable roof. Baseball is meant to be played outside on grass, but not in a tropical rain forest.

Glad you had a good time, not sorry you lost, congratulations on your engagement, and best of luck (to you and your fiance, NOT the Marlins).

Well it is time for me to chime in here about this series. I am proud to say that our Marlins have so far won one game. Of course everyone knows this already but I am throwing in my support for the win. The bats have been very flat for the past two games which is discouraging. I hardly think that these pitchers are any better than the Priors and the Woods we did well against in the past series.

I am DISGUSTED by the lack of respect this team has gotten from every single news organization I have seen. Whether it is online, on ESPN or on FOX the comments I have heard have been outrageous. These are not football playoffs, where there is only one game to determine your winner. How can commentators and fans get away with saying that the Giants, the Cubs and every other team the Marlins have played deserve to be there more than the Marlins? These have all been 7 game series....that is 21 games that each team could have put the Marlins away and failed. Why do the Cubs and the Red Sox teams deserve to go to the World Series more than the Marlins? Because their fans are more supportive, because they have had teams in the league longer? The Marlins have been in the league for just over 10 years. The Cubs? The Red Sox? Good God! What are the excuses for them not reaching the WS for the past 75 years or however long it has been? Last I checked it was the players that determined if you made it this far. Not the poor, whining fans who think their teams "deserve" to be there. I couldn't't believe when I was watching ESPN and heard one of the commentators saying that the Marlins do not deserve to be in the WS because their fans weren't "real" fans. Also that the Red Sox/Yanks series was the "real" WS. Whatever!

Listening to the Fox announcers irritates me even more. I couldn't believe when just prior to the game they had on one of the sports "chicks" and another guy sitting outside of the stadium discussing the game to come when the woman blurts out that this is a "best in five" series. Did I miss something? Isn't it 7? And then to hear the announcers talking ad nauseum about ProPlayer Stadium, how difficult it is to play there, how the field is so odd, how you can't it a home run, how Bernie Williams will have to really run to catch a ball, blah, blah, blah. You would think the Yanks had never played on a baseball field other than there own before.

This of course is in no way met to offend my favorite Cubs/Red Sox fans on this Board. You guys are great! I'm sure if the Marlins were to win the WS they still wouldn't even get their props. Perhaps in another 85 years....

As a Yankee fan from the cradle, I agree almost entirely with your comments. The Marlins have a great team, from top to bottom. They beat the Giants quite easily, and had an impressive series win over the Cubs. I think it is a little unfair to say the Yankees are going to win as though the Marlins are a Little League team that somehow stumbled into Yankee Stadium. That being said, I still think the Yankees will win it all, but give Florida a little respect.

ProPlayer stadium though is another story. No baseball team should play in a football stadium...

The comment about it being a 5 game series was because they split the first 2 games. So now whoever wins 3 out of the last 5 games wins...

after seeing the marlins...I like them and wish them luck....but proplayer stadium is a great football stadium nota baseball field....

Marlins need their own stadium..but will not get it since they have no following... and getting fans for playoffs in NOT following....they will stay in financial problems....thats the economics of baseball however bad it sounds...

Alexandra, I can definitely understand your feelings. Underneath the chatter of all the announcers, you can be sure that there's disappointment that it didn't turn out to be a Cubs-Red Sox or Cubs-Yankees WS. But shame on them if they let this translate into unfair assessments of the Marlins or heavy-handed remarks about which team(s) "deserved" to be in the Series. Or if they make a big deal about things the Yankees do on the field while ignoring or minimizing similar plays by the Marlins.

I've been in your shoes many times over the years in regard to my own team, the Baltimore Orioles. Believe it or not, they fielded many great teams in the 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Come playoff and WS time, it really got old listening to the focus always on the other team...and having our best players compared unfavorably with their counterparts in the other uniform. In those days, the O's were considered a small market team and received little attention until the post-season....you could always tell the media were unfamiliar with individual players and the team in general. As you indicated, it's hard to avoid feeling that your team fails to get the respect it's earned.

Anyway, re the criticism of Pro Player Stadium--unfortunately, it's a given that the media will be critical of stadiums not built first and foremost as baseball parks, no matter who plays there. Most of the comments I've heard have not been so much about the stadium itself as the relatively low attendance, especially given the Marlin's winning ways. Fairly or not, I think the media perceives this as fan "indifference," and their commentary sometimes reflects this perception.

But you and the other Marlins fans can be proud that you've made it to the WS twice since the team's inception. AND despite the fact that Marlins management, unfortunately, felt that finances compelled that "fire sale" of your best players in the off-season following your first WS win. That's one thing fans of all teams have to come to terms with---the fact that baseball today is first and foremost a business...and management and players alike are businessmen.

Naaah. Just as baseball should be played on grass, there should be little more than a few dying blades growing from the hardpan on a football field. A football field needs mud, snow, ice, ... mix in a little blood and puke. Lambeau Field in December; now that's a football stadium. The kind of place the visiting team hates to walk into.
