Default Dusting off this forum

What with Opening Day having taken place, I thought I'd stick my neck out a little and see if anybody else on this board has any interest in baseball ???

I'm a long-time Baltimore Orioles fan (no pity, please) and therefore am most familiar with the American League, but I also try to follow at least the main events taking place in the National League.

Seems like baseball has been overshadowed by football and basketball for some time now, but maybe there are still a few relics like me out there.

Climbing on soap box

I used to be a big time Orioles fan -- listened to them in the dark (when I should've been sleeping) as a kid on WTOP radio with Chuck Thompson and Jon Marr (the announcers and I could rattle off stats out the whazoo (Steve Stone 25-7 Cy Young year). Now, I don't give a fat-rat's butt about the Orioles -- and I won't until the owner (Peter Angelos) drops dead...

Ooooh, Kemosabe, strong feelings indeed! Judging from the drop-off in attendance, there are more than a few who feel as you do. Let's just say, I have mixed feelings about Angelos that become less mixed to the degree he keeps his HANDS off the club. Also, I must confess to breaking my life-long promise NOT to be just a fair-weather fan. I just decided, for my own well-being, I had to stop following the club last year. This year can also be pretty much crossed off. But, with the change in the front office (Mike Flanagan and Jim Beattie as general managers), I do feel there's hope for 2004.

I surely hope I get to Wrigley Field before modern baseball economics closes it down. It's a real treasure, like Fenway Park (which will be meeting its end soon enough).

Say what's up to Dusty Baker for me. I still think that SF Giants management should have kept him around here. Anyway he'll do your Cubbies a world of good. I know he did alot for us when he was here.

Anyway new year, new season, semi new team w/ a 2-0 start. Should be cool...Play Ball!!!!!

Default GO BRAVES!!

Braves are off to a rough start, but like every year, they will l win the division and CHOKE again. I kind of gettign sick of saying "maybe next year". Maybe I should start rooting for the local Giants. Okay, maybe not...

Ziploc, I have to say Camden Yards is the coolest stadium I have visited yet!! I like it better than Pac Bell Park and Yankee Stadium.

Ah, a Braves fan living in alien territory in California. The Braves absolutely must have the best regular season winning percentage in baseball for a number of years (just my instinct, haven't looked it up). But it must be frustrating to never get over that final hump. I think they'll be there again at season's end, but I can't say I see them going all the way........

Yeah, I have to say we local O's fans are proud of Camden Yards. The park itself, I think, continues to be more of a draw than our woeful team.......

Well, Braves won it all in 1995, so it's not a total defeat.

Camden was so great. I got to see Ripken in his final season and left with a Ripken jersey and a BIG smile.

Ziploc: No indeed, I do not like the owner one bit -- I think he's done a lot to turn the franchise into a laughing stock!! My personal opinion, of course -- I stopped attending games after Cal Ripken retired...

Hope the Montreal Expos get relocated to the D.C. area!!!

Ah yes, the boys of summer!!!

Oh yeah, the Braves DID get there in 1995.....thanks for reminding me.

Re Ripken......I was privileged to watch this guy his entire career, start to finish. And, I was there for his final game that, quite unexpectedly, turned out to be at Camden Yards. The end of the Ripken era.... Everything since then with the Orioles team seems like a letdown.

yeah, bummer. their roster isn't very strong this season. Rodrigo Lopez was a nice surprise to their pitching last year, but noone else is really stepping up.
