Default planning a trip to Fleet Week in SFO

Hey folks, the family and I (wife and 4 y.o.) are planning on attending Fleet Week up in SFO. This is still in the planning stages, but we're thinking about driving up there from L.A. Just a few questions I guess. I've read that about 1 million people are expected to attend the week long festivities. How crazy will it get? I'm sure room rates will be as high as the sky as well. Anything to look out for? Visit? It's not my first time to SF, but I haven't been there in some time. I've always loved to visit SF, but that is one expensive city!

Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

Check for prices across the bay. Jack London square, Oakland, Alameda. You can take the bus or bart to SF. http://travelc.priceline.com/hotel/l...ondon%20Square

It depends how adventurous you want to be, how much time you plan for the visit, what are your preferences with 4 y.o. etc.
To watch Blue Angels it is nice to place yourself either somewhere along Conzelman Rd (Marin Headlands) or on Crissy Field. Fisherman Wharf is also a nice spot but probably more crowded during Fleet Week. If you are more adventurous type you may want to drive to Tiburon, take ferry to Angel Island and climb Mt. Livermore for a spectacular view of the Blue Angels and the entire Bay. I think there is also ferry from SF to Angel Island.
Will you take 5, 101 or 1? There is also fun on the way up...
If you tell me more specifics I'll be more than happy to offer tons of tips and suggestions. How much do you expect to pay for the place to stay? Living East Bay may be indeed a viable option as nsaspook suggested. If you are willing to drive to the City it may save you some $$.
