Cargo Trailer to Camp In...Your Thoughts

Hey Everyone,

The family and I are looking at going camping.
I am always one to look at the frugal side of things and save money. I have been looking at tents at various places and all. Then I thought I have a 6x9 Pace cargo trailer less than 1 year old and paid off. I figured I could add a zipper screen on the inside to provide an easy access door while using it. All I would need is an air mattress. Also, understand I have taken very good care of it so it is very clean inside. My camping trip would only be a couple of days in March so I figured why not use this. The ceiling is metal and it would provide wet free protection in case of rain.
What are your thoughts?

P.S: The trailer would be hooked up to the vehicle so no worries there about balance.

Condensation would only be a problem if you closed the doors.

Could you be locked in by some "joker" and not be able to get out?

All you are saving is the cost of a tent. My last tent was $120. Is the increased MPG worth it?

I think that is a great idea. You only need it for a couple of days.

Rocky brings up good points about being locked in and condensation would be a big problem.

If you think you are going to use it more ofter, maybe a vent pop up at the top.

It would be great if it rains, you would be high off the ground. Also it would take no time to set up camp, and no making sure the site drains so your tent doesn't collect water.


I think if there is a way to lock the doors to the side and keep them opened and also put a vinyl closure with zipper.

Thanks for your thoughts. The security
was my biggest concern. I am looking at a chain with a large lock to prevent the doors from being locked on us. I am also looking at a vinyl door cover w/zipper. Since the roof has metal bars I figured I can run the power along that to prevent it from starting a fire.

My ultimate idea is to add in some rope lights on the ceiling for light, maybe a 6x9 carpet and attach our detachable DVD player (dual screen) to the roof rails. It will be like a little cove and all. I also figure a small tent heater also attached to the metals rails for heat would be good as well. I might even go as far as to get some material for the walls to spruce it up, who knows .
I'll let you know how it goes.

I would be really cautious with this setup.

Only one exit - could be problematic - All campers should have at least 2 exits (often 1 or more windows doubles as an exit).

No cross ventatlation - could get stuffy in a hurry and without air changing, the air in the trailer would only last 2 adults maybe 8 hours at best. CO2 levels would be dangerous long before then. It would not be worth risking the family on this one.

Spend the money and get a tent or rent a camper. Your family will be much safer and appreciate it more.
