It is my parents 30th Anniversary this weekend and my sister and I are taking them out for dinner. Prior to the dinner we will be meeting for champagne and apps. Any recs for a decent champagne in the $@0-$40 range? Thanks.

Not a a huge champagne fan here, but I cold not find any champagne ratings at the consumer reports member site (then again, I am not sure that I would want the same guys that rate my washing machine purchase to also rate my beverages).
If you go to www.wine.com and do a search under "champagne" the site will let you sort by price and provide you with ratings (in some cases by multiple judging bodies) all on one page. Obviously you can take the results and do your shopping locally. That may be a good place to start. I am sure that "Von Drunk" will chime in with some fine malt liquor advice as well.... after all, he finds the stuff "smoov".

Redd Foxx used to talk about mixing Champagne and Ripple; he called it Champipple.

Whoops - I might've made a mistake. Korbel might be the cheap swill our cheapo friends brought over as a token "thanks for dinner, but please don't open this when we're here because we won't drink that dishwater" recycled gift.
My old Ag Econ prof from college and I trade gifts during the holidays, usually in the $25-$50 range. He's a wine nut and always gives either wine or champagne. Moet & Chandon "White Star" was his most recent. So my guess is that it's probably considered pretty good and reasonably priced. As you can tell, we haven't had it. LOL @ Champipple. |

Thanks for your correction Worm. I was about to take no more advice from you if that was your recommendation! Korbel - blech! Moet is good, looging for something new.

Why spend the $ on champagne? Mickey's or Colt .45 will do just fine. You can pick up a tasty forty at the local supermarket for a $1.99. ***INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT DELETED BY KEMOSABE***

Alexandra242628, living in Ft. Lauderdale, you should have a wine store some place near-by. Go there and ask, they should have 6-8 different Champagne to choose from. They will not steer you wrong because they will want you back as a customer. When ever my wife and I drink Champagne or wine we go to our local wine store and so far every thing they have suggested has been excellent. Also, many excellent Champagnes are available for way less than $40.

I would second the opinion on seeking help in a local store, though the website idea may give you a basis to enter the store with some knowledge under your belt. I tend to do things in this manner to get the "lay of the land" so to speak. Good luck!

Andre Pink Champagne will work, but I would go for a good wine instead like Pinot Grigio from the Cavit Collection or Beringer White Zinfandel, If you want something sweet try Ballatore Roso Red Spumante or for a little more money a good german wine like Riesling Spatlese by Schmitt Sottne this is my favorite. Hope I helped!

To those who are interested I have found my holy grail of yummy, inexpensive champagne! I received an issue of Wine Enthusiast a month ago but never looked at. It happened to be the Best of 2003 issue. They listed a Spanish champagne - Cristalino - as their best value pick for 2003 for champange. The reviewers said that you could barely distinguish the difference between it and more expensive brands. I went to my local Publix which has an extensive wine collection (3 rows) and found one left. It was perfect, not too dry and no aftertaste. All of the guests raved about it and said how good it was...they thought it was very expensive. Good thing for me it was only $8.00.
