Ok, I love seafood. I wish I could eat it every day but my wallet does not permit me to do so. What is your favorite kind? I love crabs. We have a couple of great places down here that I could live at (Joe's Stone Crabs for what else, stone crabs and The Rustic Inn for garlic golden crabs). Last night I made tuna that friends of ours caught on their boat the day before. Occasionally I make a clambake w/ lobsters, clams, mussells, shrimp, sausage, and potatoes that is amazing. My dream is to open a little crab shack on the beach where you can eat seafood and drink beer. Sigh...

I LOVE crabs (all varieties, but particularly blue crab), shrimp, and lobster. I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where blue crab is king. (Some would say oysters were right up there, too, but for some reason, I never liked them!) My relatives who moved to Florida say that blue crab is not eaten very much there....Don't know if they're not generally available or just not well-liked. What's the story? My mother could cook the best softcrabs (bluecrabs that have molted, but haven't hardened yet) in the world. I still get a kick out of sitting down to a meal of softcrabs in the presence of friends from other parts of the country....and watching their faces as I chow down on the ENTIRE crab-- legs, fins, and all (they're the best part, nice and crunchy...Yumm)

My wife's uncle is a seafood buyer. He buys from the fishermen then fulfills larger orders. Fresh salmon, dungeness crab, prawns/shrimp, clams and oysters are all harvested locally. Nothing like fresh and free seafood.

Watermen in my small community would regularly bring my mother a bushel of crabs gratis; one of the things to be said for lifelong friendships and/or family ties. Relatively few people get to taste freshly steamed and picked-out crabmeat. As you say, Nothing like fresh and free seafood! Last I heard, a bushel currently sells for $150. Thar's gold in them thar crabs!

Ziplock: You made my mouth water. In fact, tonight I will be picking up a bucket of garlic golden crabs and a 12 pack (hey it is Friday). We do have blue crabs down here but you are right, they aren't as popular as the other varieties. I'm not crazy about them. Too me, they are a bit fishy tasting, not as mild as the others. I do like them in a dip...I had a great hot bluecrab dip the other day at a restaurant. Softshell crabs are the bomb, especially the way you talked about preparing them.
Love lobster. Each year, one of the fancy-pants lawyers in my firm rents a house in Maine for a month. He lets each person in the office order up to SIX lobsters which he FedExs from Maine. Totally amazing! Well guys, when I have my grand opening of my crab shack you all will be invited.

I think I'd really like those garlic golden crabs. Are they steamed, or what? I think it's something we don't see up this way. I understand what you mean about blue crabs seeming more "fishy" than others. I do think they have more of a pronounced "crab taste" than, say, dungeness crabs or Alaskan King Crab legs. I grew up eating blue crab meat from the get-go, so it was less of a transition for me to enjoy other crab varieties than for someone who came to blue crabs later (does that make sense?) Man, I can never get enough lobster. Whether it's boiled, baked in a casserole, or in a Chinese food dish, it's a real treat. You are so lucky that lawyer is good enough to send lobster to you guys down south! Shrimp....that's my answer to "What's your favorite food?" Shrimp, in every form possible. Actually, my favorite shrimp DISH is baked shrimp stuffed with crab imperial....that's a biggie around here. OMG, I'm salivating uncontrollably. Gotta stop now!

You are correct. I meant to say that I was going to do it on Friday, which is now today. The golden crabs are a white crab that resembles the Alaskan Snow, King, etc. They have long legs and are pretty sweet. The place that we get them from steams them and then soaks them in this garlic sauce. They are super-messy but sooooo good. Here is the website if you ever want to splurge...
