1997 Subaru Outback Wagon 5speed (50/50 all wheel drive).

1. All wheel drive
2. At least as big as the Outback
3. Capable of towing at least 2000 lbs.
4. front side airbags.
5. Decent fuel economy
6. Room for Bubba in the back (93lb. male doberman)

My wife was going to replace her Outback with another Outback.
When we started the research we realized the only way to get side airbags in the Outback was by buying a limited with the 2 sunroof thing going on. It cuts down rear headroom by about 2 1/2" and severely impares the big dog's ability to stand in the rear of the wagon. My wife would have none of that so we went looking. We looked at the Highlander and we were both unimpressed . She complained the front seats were too short (she is 5'3') but she noticed it. We talked about looking at the MB. Then I found the Honda website for the new Pilot. Since her 97 Outback replaced her 1991 Accord (the oldest son needed it more than she did) which had replaced her 1986 Prelude we went to a dealer in mid-June who had one to look at (not to buy). We looked, we drove, we went home and decided that yes, we could both live with the automatic 5 speed transmission. We hadn't owned an automatic in 26 years but with one 5 speed still in the family (2001 Subaru Forester) we would give it a go.
Very good vehicle. Happy with decision. Tows like a champ. Rides like a dream. Good long distance vehicle. Love the low revs at high speeds.
