Did they learn much from Katrina? News tonight is that people are traveling less than 20 miles in 10 hours (depending upon which news person is talking to which person).
They have FINALLY opened both sides of the interstate to one way traffic while people run out of gas and stations are on empty. CBS said that authorities still felt people would be better on the highway than fighting the hurricane at their homes!! I would rather be in a well built home that a 2000 to 4500 pound vehicle that rising waters can float off. This is a time to have a NAV system. Has anybody thought about getting off the interstate and taking the back roads or are they jammed also?

My family and I are stuck in West Houston (Katy, Tx). I have four automobiles and I don't dare take even one of them to try to leave.
Everything closed early this afternoon. I have relatives in Austin and Waco offering their homes to my family, but I can't even consider attempting a drive of 160 miles or more if I went to Waco. Again, I am in extreme West Houston and expect some extensive damage to my property, but plan to get into the center of my home and wait this thing out. My mother lives about 10 miles from me and has had her parents (in their 80's) living with her for 3 weeks. They live....rather they lived 9-10 miles ease of downtown New Orleans. Satellite pics show catastrophic water levels on their street. Can't leave.... My sister, who had a high-risk pregnancy had a baby boy yesterday (WED.)at a hospital about a stone's throw from the Astrodome. She is with my mother.... Cant leave.. This sucks!! |

Good luck to Jestmaty and anyone else in the path. I'm just north of Austin and it seems like the storm will stay east of us. |

Hopefully Rita will keep Houston on it's west side but it will still be scary. A lot of people will be praying for you and the people of Texas.

Put food and water in different spots in your home, (in case of collapse). Photos, checkbooks, computer hard drives, cash, things that cannot be replaced, put in the cars that are in the garage, (if Rita takes the roof, she will have to destroy the car to damage those things). Although your pretty far from the coast to be affected by the storm surge, put tools on your 2nd floor in case of flood to cut thru the roof if need be...... Be safe and we hope to hear from you....... ==edit == Rita has turned......looks like you'll escape the worst..........

Hurricane is about 60-70 miles south of Lake Charles, La at 8pm CST.
Over here in Katy, Tx. the winds are gusting, but nothing I haven't seen before. I guess we dodged a bullet this time. We never did leave. If you saw the chaos yesterday (Thursday) on tv, it was insane. Unfortunately, good news for one city is always bad news for another when hurricanes change direction. This storm is still very large and I think some seriously bad spin-off tornadoes and flooding could be in my immediate future. Thanks for all the good wishes and support, now direct those thoughts to our neighbors to the East. Jestmaty |

Best of luck to everyone there. My wife is in Beaumont working for Good Morning America and at the time of this writing, it appears this area is going to be the bullseye.
Take care everyone!!!
