I've owned CJ-7's and an Explorer. The Explorer was AWD with 4x4 High and Low range. I am considering purchasing a Pilot, but I'm concerned about its off the road ability. I like to surf fish on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. For any of you that have been there, there is nasty loose sand on the beach, and it can be a challenge for some 4x4's. Have any of used your Pilot on the Outer Banks? Have you used your Pilot in loose sand?
Thanks, Joe |

Welcome. An off-road thread, discussing beach use, is here

My Pilot has worked very well in deep, loose sand with stock size Michelin Cross Terrain tires. The 4X4 system does an excellent job in sand. The only issue for the open beach might be ground clearance and most any stock 4X4 could struggle with that. I've never needed a low range on the Pilot, even pulling a heavy utility trailer through sand.
