Default 2008 Toyota Highlander pricing and price comparisons

I've uploaded pricing info on the 2008 Highlander to my site's database, so it's now possible to not only configure the new Highlander but also thoroughly compare it's price to the 2007 and to competing vehicles.

2008 Toyota Highlander pricing and specifications

If you adjust for features, the price is close to that of the 2007 Highlander--until you factor in the 2007's $2,000 rebate.

Compared to the 2008 Pilot, the new Highlander is priced abut $2,000 higher when both are loaded up. Adjusting for feature differences reduces the gap to about $800. This is before incentives, which will have been running around $2,500 on the Pilot.

I looked at one briefly the other day. I like the design but it still looks smaller inside than the Pilot. It kinda reminds you of a baby 4Runner. Also I noticed the woodgrain looks so fake. I think it might be the stick on type. I would still buy the Pilot over the Highlander!

If a/c is a big consideration (Florida, desert. etc.}, the nod would have to go to the Pilot, as its a/c is so much more powerful than the Highlander. Not even close.

I will agree with the size difference!

At 6' 7" I looked like I was a circus clown in a clown car after getting into the Highlander!

I am thinking the Highlander is more in line with the CR-V, Escape and the like?

The A/C is a big consideration here in Texas and the Pilot's works great!

My kids love the rear manual control and they still want to get their coats out!

You're probably talking about the original Highlander. There's an all-new larger one for 2008 that's closer in size to the Pilot. I went to a dealer hoping to drive one today, but they haven't received any yet.

I believe they were '07's as it was a month or so ago.

Yesterday (8/6/07) I was in Raleigh and had some spare time ( ) and I stopped at the Toyota dealer to look at the new 2008 Highlander. I did not test drive it but here are my observations.

- The metal flake white exterior paint looked gorgeous.

- Exterior styling is a matter of choice but I liked the previous version that looked a little smaller at the rear and looked kind of sporty. Now it looks more utilitarian.

- I hope the new Pilot will have a 5000 pound tow capacity like the Highlander (no caveats about boats). The tow package comes with "Heavy duty radiator, engine oil cooler, 200 watt fan coupling (??), transmission cooler with water cooler, 150 amp alternator, and prewired harness."

- Telescoping steering wheel. (I could not get the steering wheel pedal relationship to my satisfaction when I looked at the previous Highlander.) Don't need it in the Pilot but I am sure some would like it.

- The 2nd row middle seat is a joke. I know some don't think much of the third row seating capacity of the Pilot but it looks like the Grand Canyon compared to the space of the center middle seat. I much prefer the Pilot's layout.

- Third row seat does not split in half like th Pilot, a definite problem as I have had to configure my Pilot to have my wife in the third row with the other portion folded down for luggage. (I had four adults and two teenage boys and the boys luggage.)

-AND THEN THERE ARE THOSE CHEAP PLASTIC SUN VISORS!! When I helped my daughter look for a car for college we looked at a used Toyota Corolla and we were not impressed with the plastic sun visors. It made a definite negative impression. She got a 2 year old Civic instead. (The family's first of three Hondas).

I thought it was because the Corolla was a cheap car but this Highlander was the Limited version with leather seats and a nice interior except for the CHEAP PLASTIC SUN VISORS. I could see and feel the raged edge of the seam.

- It had an Aux Switch AND an plug in for an iPod/MP3. Why can't Honda see the light on that issue?

- A Snow switch to enable easier starting in snow by starting off in 2nd gear.

- No room behind the third row seat when it was up.

All in all it is an improved vehicle but I would still prefer my 05 Pilot.

(BTW - The chart comparing it to a Pilot compared their Sporty Edition to a Pilot EX saying that Satellite Radio ready was not available. There were a few other things like that but I can't remember at the moment.)

Nice comparison.

If you put the column shift into 2nd gear in your Pilot, you will start in 2nd gear as well. No buttons necessary.

Are you sure? I thought that it won't let you go ABOVE 2nd, but still downshifts when needed and starts off in 1st. Put the column into 2nd and accelerate. $1 says you'll feel it shift from 1st to 2nd.

It won't go past 2nd gear, but it will start in second, not first. It works that way in our 2001 CR-V, and it worked that way in my friend's '80 Accord when he had it in the early 90's.

Almost every car I ride in now seems small compared to the Pilot, even the 4-Runner. It's the width. You'd have to get a full size SUV to get the same sense of spaciousness. It will take some getting used to if I decide not to go with a Pilot for my next vehicle.

You are correct it will not start in nor will it down-shift to 1st. It will start and stay in 2nd gear.

In the Honda Pilot Owners Manual it even tells you to put it in 2 to in when you are in snowy/slippery conditions.

I went and read it last night to make sure I just wasn't imagining it.
