Yeah, I know its comparing apples to oranges, but just for those interested.
My Pilot was parked next to a new Expedtion at Church this morning, and it I started to compare the two. The Expedtion is wider, higher, and longer from the outside. Pros Expedtion 300 hp, 365 lbs of torque. Strong running motor. On paper the Pilot might be quicker, but drive the two, and the Epedition definitely feels stronger. 3rd row seat is definitely larger and more comfortable for adults. 3rd row seat is much easier to fold up, and out of the way. Every button is lit up at night, the doors, steering wheel, etc. Key pad on out side drivers door means you never will get locked out. Tow capacity near 9000 lbs! When the doors are locked, you can still open the passenger door without unlocking first (I hate having to unlock my Pilots doors before I get out). Doors automatically lock when you put vehicle in drive. Makes you feel proud when you drive into a campsite. Very capable off road with the 4x4 limited slip option. It will easily go places where a Pilot can't, no doubt about it. The Expedition has this cool little mirror in the front by the rear view mirror. Its concave, which allows you to see all the passengers behind you. 2nd row seat is a bit bigger than the Pilots. I like the A/C vents better in the Expedition. They are located in the ceiling duct. This provides better cooling There is even one for the third row passengers. Pros Pilot Dependability. Quality. Gas mileage. I get 16 to 17mpg in my Pilot. The Expedition got around 12mpg! Peace of mind when my wife is driving with our kids in the snow, up and down the mountains where we live. Very few rattles and sqeaks. I was also impressed with the new Expedition in this regard, except for one annoying squeak. Couldnt tell where it was coming from. Resale value. Instrumentation. I love the instrument panel in my Pilot. On the Epedtion, the column shifter obscures the view of the 4x4 drive switch. Also, if you move the steering wheel up, it hides part of the instrument panel. I cant believe the Ford engineers didnt notice these things when they took it for a test drive. Anyways, this is just a fun comparison. My wife and I love our Pilot!

The new Fords are improving in every respect,no question about that-but they had a lot of room for improvement. On the acceleration,I know what you mean,I have felt the same subjective feeling comparing a V-8 with a V-6 in other vehicles-the V-8 just "feels" noticeably faster. However the numbers tell a different story-CReports say 0-60 takes 10.5 seconds with the new 300 HP 5.4 in a 4X4 Expedition-the Pilot does 0-60 in 8.2 secs-NOT EVEN CLOSE(but I have felt the same seat of pants feeling you have). The MPG is at least as bad-city hy is 8-18 vs 12-25 according to CR.Weight-kills,and Fords new 5.4 isn't a very quick 300 horses-On the Titan forum(Titan 305 hp) this has been extensively discussed;the Titan is worlds quicker than the new F-150(7.3 VS 8.3 despite the tiny 5 hp claimed difference in HP).The consensus is that Ford lies about output.
Like you said,you bought the right SUV.Charlie PS I'm not a Ford hater,but they still have a way to go;they repeatedly "cheap out" the 5.4 is a 3 valve head-why 3 valves-CHEAPER-MAYBE $20 a unit!! |

While in Vancouver last month, I drove an Expedition for four days.
Pros: Great seats Nice power (torque) although somehow I knew it was still slower than the Pilot Nice digital display w/km left on tank More masculine looks than the Pilot (subjective) Cool power rear seats Steering Wheel mounted controls: a/c temp, fan speed Easy access to 3rd seat Cons: Poor Materials - cheap plastic on the dash, center console & doors (Eddie Bauer edition!!) Guzzled gas Too long - barely fit into underground parking lot. Each time I parked it in the garage my wife had to get out and tell me when I was within 1 inch of the wall, otherwise the gate would close down on the rental. I even tapped (yes I left a note... never received a call though) another car when getting out of a parking spot. Reliability, resale value, gas milage and overall size took the Expedition out of contention for my dollar.

The front cup holders on the Exp rock. With inserts in, they fit about any cup or bottle, with inserts out they take a quart bottle!
Like: Extra size, heavy duty suspension and drive train Don't like: Seat comfort, fuel economy (which drove my purchase decision to the Pilot) |
