Default 2006 Ford Explorer

While out walking the dog last night I saw a completely un-disguised 2006 Ford Explorer. It was an Eddie Bauer edition with a very throaty sounding V8. Front and rear styling has been "updated". The vehicle now looks heavier. I don't really care for the styling changes, but the rumble of the V8 really got my attention.

I Googled this morning, and found that Ford is using the 292HP V8 from the 2005 Mustang in the 2006 Explorer! Wow!

Here's a link to the only information I could find on the Ford web site:

Ford Fleet Info

And here's a blurb and pics on AutoWeek:

Interesting..........

It looks the same to me except for the different grille... I think they look weird. The way you can see the undercarriage from the side even with side steps (looks like the running boards cover it up pretty well however)...

Sounds like it will need the V8 from the Mustang. Curious what the gas mileage will be.

Looks like that extending the grill below the top of the bumper is beginning to be a trend. I saw an Audi and a VW with their grills almost all the way to the bottom of the bumper.

Full information is here on the Ford Web Site: http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/explorer/

They are calling it a complete redesign! It still looks the same! I sure wouldn't want to feed that V8! Especially since I'd be winding it up all the time!

Car and Driver wrote about their first drive of the 2006 Explorer, and mentioned the fact that nobody approached them all weekend saying, "Wow, is that the new Explorer?"

Some styling cues are similar between the Explorer and 2006 Pilot. It's interesting to see where the industry is heading with styling.

I still like the Pilot better.

Just got out of an '02 Eddie Bauer Explorer -- it was in the shop more than it was on the road (at least it seemed like it!). I felt lucky to sell it for $13,500. It had 78,000 miles and was in mint condition!
As much as I wanted to buy another Explorer, my wallet, my wife and my common sense wouldn't let me do it.
We are very happy with the Pilot. I love the way it sounds when I put my foot into it!

I, too, love the sound of my foot to the floor in my Pilot......the Exploder usually sounded like a rattling cage when I did that . The Pilot V6 seems SOOO much better than the V6 in my Exploder, even than the V8 one I test drove (yeah, I know, what was I thinking),

I just don't like the re-styled front end of the new Exploders. Too chrome-y or something.
