Default Dr. Strangelove

or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Basically, any Stanley Kubrick film except "Eyes Wide Shut". Tom Cruise simply cannot act.

Default Hidalgo

The DVD just came out....Mr. Ziploc and I loved the movie and highly recommend it.

I wonder if the title Hidalgo led others beside me to mistake the movie as being about some long-ago figure in Mexican history.

But, this Hidalgo is a HORSE....specifically a mustang. And he's ridden by Viggo Mortensen, playing a character based on a real-life Pony Express rider named Frank Hopkins who, in 1890, travels to Arabia with Hidalgo to compete in a dangerous long distance race across the desert. To the Arab sheiks and princes Hopkins is competing against, he is just a cowboy riding a lowly mustang who shouldn't even think of risking life and limb going up against their royally bred Arabian horses in a grueling race that has long been at the center of their horse-oriented desert culture. But Hopkins hopes to show that, in both people and horses, bloodlines are not all that matters.

Anyway, the photography and desert landscapes are magnificent, and the film keeps you engaged from start to finish.

Sorry to be a spoilsport but it seems that in some circles this movie is as controversial as Fahrenheit 9/11 with Frank Hopkins as a bigger lier than Michael Moore.

But I'll agree, the cinematography is beautiful.

I wasn't aware that there was a big controversy surrounding Frank Hopkins, and that he apparently was into such self-promotion. But you have to figure, as is usually the case with films supposedly "based on a true story," there will be much more story than truth in the movie. And that's the spirit in which I saw the film... looking to be entertained rather than looking for historical fact.

The filmmakers probably should have characterized the movie as fictional. But the fact they didn't shouldn't keep anyone from seeing it.
