Interest in Protecting the Side Molding from DINGS
Many members have complained about dings in the body side molding. So, I'm experimenting with a clear polyurethane tape to protect the molding. This is the same material used to protect the front of vehicles called clear mask/clear bra. The testing I have done so far seem pretty promising. It's fairly easy to apply; and using an 18 mil thick tape, it's bulletproof. You can take any direct hits and have NO DINGS! The downside is that this tape is super expensive. I would need to sell this at $65 + $10 S/H. The kit would include 8 strips of tape. So, before I invest more time on this, I wanted to poll the membership and see who would buy this at $75?

Here's what it looks like. I'm testing the tape on the front passenger door. The tape is on the upper and lower section of the molding which protrudes out.

Material is the exact same one that is on your Pilot already located in the lower corner of the 2nd row doors. If you had to replace this piece, it would cost about $16 from the dealership.

Hey Wilson, i think the dings appear above the molding, because it stands out more. I think theres alot of dings near the door handles, what you think.

That's why I'm polling. The one little ding I have on my Pilot is around the side molding. I generally park in isolated areas when shopping to prevent anyone from dinging my Pilot. If majority of owners are getting dings in the body, then there is no point in protecting the molding. Anyway, I'm looking for more feedback.

Hey wwong, thanks for offering us yet another useful product. I was wondering, does the tapes, when installed, cover the whole width of the BSM or just the top and the bottom third, leaving the middle part exposed? The part about the kit containing 8 tapes got me wondering. Thanks!

I've got a nice ding in the top third of the side mouldings. I think this would have prevented any damage had I had it installed. Good idea!
One concern is with wax buildup along the edges of the tape. Probably doesn't affect most people but it would bother me. |

RipRock: The tape covers the upper and lower section of the molding since it protrudes out. I could have covered the whole molding, but it would have cost more and I didn't think anyone was getting dings in the middle section, but I could be wrong.
smurray: You can wipe the wax buildup off the edge of the tape. On the door edge tape, which is thinner, I can easily remove the wax buildup .

I would be interested in a full size BSM protection if it's not too expensive. Even that won't protect the door's sheet-metal. I have a small ding at the middle of the rear door which is sheet-metal.
I haven't seen any long narrow BSM accessories for the Pilot like on the MDX. If there's one like it for the Pilot, with the protective film it would have prevented my dent. I just got a Park Smart magnetic door guard stock #20030 made in USA by Auto Care Products, Inc., San Diego, CA. It's a clear PVC with rubber magnetized strip and measures 25"x 6.5"x 0.63" cost $16.95 each. I'm going to use this in my garage but it's not for public parking lots because it doesn't have any locking devices. Here's a pic.

Getting samples of this molding which is attached using a 3M adhesive. This looks similar to Borg's.
