Default Poll: How many SUV's have you owned?

We have had polls on color and how many other Honda's we have owned - but I have not seen one on how many SUV's (AWD/4WD) we have owned prior to the Pilot.

So...... let's hear it!

After I started the poll, I realized it could be interpreted as "true" SUV's (as we know them today), or the vast group of "other" AWD/4WD vehicles out there.

I'm sure that most everyone here is in the "0" or "1" category for true SUV's - but I'm guessing there are many that have had many of the "other" AWD/4WD vehicles - which includes everything from cars to pickups to vans to.....

Question and what do you call a "True SUV"?

What are the set of atributes that are mandatory?
E.G. An SUV must have xxxxx

What atributes are optional / selectable?
E.G. An SUV must have either yyyy or zzzzz

What atributes are disallowed?
E.G. An SUV must not have DDDDDD

Default "true" SUV

Good questions! And I bet if you ask any 3 people on the street, you will get 4 different answers!!! I suppose I would pretty much classify a SUV as something OTHER than:
A 4WD Pickup (Like a Ford F150)
A 4WD/AWD Van (Like a Chevy Astro)
A 4WD/AWD Car (Like a Subaru Outback)

If you go to www.cars.com and click on SUV's they give listings of subcompact, compact, mid-size and full-size "SUV's" (by their definition) - which pretty well matches mine.

IMHO

Default So

You are saying:

What are the set of atributes that are mandatory?
An SUV must have some form of 4WD

What atributes are disallowed?
An SUV must not have a pick-up or sedan/station wagon body?

So a 2WD CR-V is not an SUV, and neither is a 2WD Blazer, 2WD Explorer?

What about a X5?, too much wagon? A Forester? not enough SUV?

This is the biggest problem with this catagory. It can not be defined, allowing the proponents and opponents to define it as serves them best.

Default so - very confusing

I don't think either of us have hit on a hard-fast definition of what a SUV really is. I do think the list at cars.com is as close as anything I have ever seen - but even with it, there will always be questions like 2WD Blazers and such. Perhaps the insurance companies have their own list - as does the EPA and the NHTSA.

Default My SUV's

I've owned the following:

1993 Ford Explorer (had no trouble with it - it was a great vehicle).

1995 Ford Explorer (new design-had to have one-had no trouble with it).

1998 Ford Eddie Bauer Expedition (saw it, had to have one - BIGGEST DAMN MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!! Over 4-years of breakdowns and problems - $33,000 in warranty repairs - finally a lemon law suit fixed and eliminated that problem. Ford's lousy customer service is the reason I can say to Ford: "piss off!"

2003 Honda PILOT-EX (I can't tell you how impressed I am with my PILOT - I'm thrilled that I decided to downsize in vehicles and buy a Honda, known for great quality and reliability)

My "Truck History"

1992 Ranger Super Cab 4x4 (AWESOME!)
1995 Explorer XLT 4x4 (BORING!)
1997 Expedition XLT 4x4 (BIG and BORING!)
1999 F150 Super Cab 4x4 (JUNK!)--Serious engine/powertrain problems including head gasket failure! Useless Dealer.
2001 F150 Super Crew 4x4 (BLAH!) --Engine oil and Trans fluid leaks, front suspension problems.

2003 Honda Pilot!!!! (FINALLY HAPPY!)

In summary, I look back and think, WOW that Ranger was a cool truck! The Exploder and Exhibition were fine, but unexciting. The '99 F150 looked SO cool. Midnight Blue Metallic with the Off-Road package. Great Off-roader! Too bad it spent so much time at the dealer getting fixed. The 2001 F150 was fine, but had consistent little annoying things go wrong. I grew tired of fluid spots on my garage floor.

Sure, the truck-based vehicles I've had could do more rough-housing off road. I did take them to some amazing places far off the paved path. I recognize and accept the compromises I've made by choosing a "Crossover" platform vehicle. In the long run I'm better off. The Pilot is a great daily driver that will do plenty of fun stuff on the weekends. After all, it's the daily stuff that makes up the majority of my driving!

Default AWD/4WD List

My list of AWD/4WD vehicles:

1963 International Scout (Awesome with a Chevy 327 V8!)
1983 Chevy S10 Blazer (OK - but a lot of rattles)
1985 Subaru RX Turbo (Very nice)
1986 Audi Quattro (Handled great)
1986 Ford F250 SuperCab (Big 460 V8 - but what a wheelbase!)
1988 Subaru GL-10 Turbo (Another Nice one)
1990 Subrau Justy (OK, but narrow track caused poor handling)
1991 Chevy Astro Van (OK - but costly repairs)
1995 Subaru Outback (Nice)
1996 Subaru GT 2.5 (Also Nice)
1997 Ford F150 SuperCab (OK, just so-so mileage)
2003 Honda Pilot EX-L

Golly, 40 years between the '63 Scout and the '03 Pilot (for the vehicles - not me)!!

YMMV

Had a 2001 Mazda Tribute prior to my Honda. The Tribute was a complete piece of garbage.
