This is principally a problem in 2003 models between VIN#s from ...500001 and ...604126, according to the TSB . There is a very comprehensive thread here .
When I called local Honda parts departments looking for the replacement part, one of the guys recited the part number from memory!! This convinces me they replace a lot of these. I'd just like to get an idea of the general failure rate of this item (and the replacement part). I know Honda has no obligation to issue a recall of a non-safety related item but I plan to write to Honda to request reimbursement of the cost of the part.

I bought my Pilot used and I noticed the rear A/C was not working before I bought it so I mentioned it to the salesman and he said he would take care of it. I bought it then realized that it hadn't been fixed, so I called them and took it back to them. Long story short, they wanted me to pay them ~ $250 for 1/2 of the diagnosis, parts and labor to replace the rear transistor, but I told them hell no because you said you were going to take care of it. Luckily they weren't *******s and stood by their word because I would have been screwed since I didn't get it in writing - I declined an extended warrany since this was not from a dealer, but a used car lot.

Not a very good sample, but not very encouraging. Don't tell me the failure rate is >50%!!. If that were the case, Honda absolutely should have done a recall.

Based on this small sampling, you could say that 80% of the people interested in this topic and in the VIN range had the failure. That's why there was a TSB
It also seems that no one outside the VIN range has the problem. Why the need for a recall?

This has been the only problem with my Pilot. Replaced under the extended warranty.

Recently, the issue has been at the top of the forums again. Maybe because it's summer.
Cast a vote.

548853 and (knock on wood) the transistor hasn't failed. Of course, I have added cleaning the filter in the center housing every time I vacuum.
