Default I bought one

Got the 100K/7yr/no ded for $1050 when I bought my 2003. Wouldn't buy one now; but 2003 was the first model year and that scared me a little.

I plan to buy a Hondacare warranty. The Pilot is a long-term purchase for us and with the navi and other electronics, I don't want to pay for potential repairs out of pocket. I've had good luck with Hondas and Acuras, but stuff happens and the navi unit by itself i somewhere north of $2k retail.

The only problem I see with the extended warranties is that they only seem to go to 100K. I wonder why? Well it's because, most vehicles begin to have problems after 100K miles. I've had several honda and toyota and had to replace 3 tranmissions on 3 of those vehicels and all after 100K miles.

Actually, they go to 120K:

First, I was talked into purchase a Honda Care thru the dealership. The package was 5yrs/100k for (WOW) $2300. I thought it was a good "protection" package.

However, I visited carspace and learned I could purchase Honda Care from other online dealership. I canceled the Honda Care which I bought from the local dealership, and I purchased the 8yrs/120K/no ded for $1230 from Bernardi.

What a big different!

However, I did purchase the "service package" for 4xx from the local dealership when I signed the contract. I wonder if I could cancel it now and get my money back. (don't flame a new car newbie here).

I was able to cancel mine, but that was before I signed the final paperwork. Still, I believe it's supposed to be cancel-able. You may just have to wait a while for your refund.

Yes, I purchased the extended warranty. I knew I would keep the Pilot for many years, and one repair would easily cost the price of the policy. Plus, I save $60 per year not having to purchase CAA roadside assistance.

So I figured it was worth the peace of mind (around CAN$1400 for 160,000 kms/ 7 yrs) - or about $200/year.

It's a Honda. Why do you need to waste your money on an extended warranty?

Well, I purchased mine because, at the time, Honda was still going through it's V6 transmission failure phase. However, it looks like the Pilot and the RL were the only V6 Honda's that did not experience a period of high failure rates. We also had a CRV that cost me twice the cost of an extended warranty after the factory warranty expired that Honda would not cover under goodwill. While Honda powertrains may last a long time, the electronics tend to develop problems sooner and replacement navi/res units are expensive. It comes down to whatever makes you comfortable.

I passed on mine.
Had a bad experience with extended warranties on my Integra.

I did not purchase the extended warranty for my vehicle. I had traded in a 2001 CR-V with 72,000 miles and $0 spent on vehicle repairs....only maintenance dollars were spent. For that reason, I did feel sad giving up that vehicle. We have a 2003 Element EX and other member of our family have Hondas/Acuras with a history of no repairs....some of these were the infamous years of models, notorious for the V6 tranny problems too. Honda has changed the game as well. It used to be you could buy the same new car warranty at 35,000 or 1 month left in the warranty period. Now they have reduced it down to 6,000 miles, to get the maximum extended warranty terms and preferential pricing, which makes it difficult to live with the car and let actual experience dictate the need for the warranty.

Correct and exactly what any actuary or insurance person will tell you.

they have already calculated the odds and you are on the losing end if you buy it.

Insurance (with your own money) is a huge waste of money for non catastrophic events
