Question Would you buy a 4-cylinder Pilot?

That 0 to 60 thread got me thinking...

All other things equal, would you buy a 4-cylinder Pilot if say:

The 0-60 mph acceleration was 11 seconds, but the Pilot's mileage was better due to the smaller engine?

Honda does amazing things with little engines, but I don't think a 4 banger would have enough umph for a fully loaded Pilot to have much performance at all. The 6 cylinder still had (has?) more HP than the Ford Exploder V8, and maybe more peak torque if I'm not mistaken. T'ain't bad at all!

No Way

The ability to tow a boat or a camper is a must for a vehicle like the Pilot

The Pilot is much too heavy to be powered by a 4 banger. If Honda put a 4 banger in, it would have to be quite large and have a lot of torque to push a 4300 lb. Pilot.

If I am not mistaken, the next Pilot will have VCM as an option (or standard). Technically, you will have a Pilot with just 3 cylinders banging away at cruising speeds or at low engine loads. In terms of fuel economy, you will theoreticaly approach that of a 2.4 L 4 banger. And as always, YMMV.

All indications are that US buyers favor Power over Economy!

You can hope and wish, but sales figure (What people do vs. what they say) is hard evidence to ignore.

A little subtle, but that's the option I would have picked!

No way.

That would be one painfully slow Pilot. Also, anyone with hill/mountains would hate all noise as that 4 cylinder would be pushing high rpm's to make it up those hills.

UGH...we had a Dodge Caravan with the "big" four in it once upon a time.

It was fine for around town but load it up and head out? "You gotta be kiddin' right?"

We live in an area that is surrounded on three sides by mountains (except for "down valley") so we were always relegated to the slow lane going uphill...what a drag! We're better off financially now so we didn't have to settle for a four banger this time!

IF they had an option and it was around the price of a fully loaded CRV EX, I'd be interested.

Reason, yes it won't do fine on long trips in mountain areas, but for going around town, if I could average 25MPG city/highway. I'd be in for that as a second vehicle for family to use around town.

But it would have to get like the CRV in milage 20/27 for me to consider it.

How is a heavier bigger vehicle going to get the same MPG?

This brings back 3 very unpleasant thoughts from my first (i.e. very basic) 4 cyl. truck:
1) Having to pick up speed going down hills so it could "kinda maintain" speed going up the next hill.
2) Flooring it going up hills... and seeing the speed drop, drop, drop...
3) Looking over & seeing grandpa passing me in his Olds, the same car I passed on a flat stretch because he was poking along.

Not going there again.
