A 4-cylinder Pilot would not be the same thing as a CR-V. The CR-V is a very different vehicle. There's a lot of cool features there that are aimed at the "active lifestyle" set (kinda like the Xterra) such as the picnic table and spare tire well that doubles as an ice container.
If Honda were to do some weight reduction (such as taking out the third seat), get it down another 1000 lbs and pop in the 2.4L iVTEC, I'm sure it would be a drivable vehicle, although I don't think the mileage would improve all that much. A great deal of efficiency is lost with the aerodynamics of an SUV combined with the AWD drivetrain.

No way, a four doen't have the torque necessary. Our 03 could use a bit more as it is. Gas mileage wouldn't increase much if at all due to the fact the motor would have to be geared so high to pull the thing.

No. Even the CRV can be move with the 2.4L .Toyota is coming up with a 6cyl for the new RAV 4
