What grade fuel are '05 owners using?
Honda had a misprint in early owner manuals that 91 octane was recommended, and they have recently corrected it to 86 or higher octane, unless towing. Interestingly, some ’05 owners hear a ping with regular gas under certain engine load conditions such as going up a hill.

-Regular (86 octane)
-Medium (89 octane)
-Premium (91 octane)

Default Octane

I have only used 87 octane in my '05. I have 1000 miles so far, and absolutely no problems. There are even different blends in Wisconsin, depending on the county you fill up in. The county I live in uses a reformulated blend with ethanol that is supposed to burn cleaner, but the county I work in uses 'regular' unleaded. I fill up at work because the reformulated stuff is usually more expensive and takes off 1-2 mpg on average.

Default 05 Fuel

I'm just getting to my 4th fillup.

I have used regular but will probably use some medium every 5th fillup or so to avoid the pinging issue I read about on anoither thread.

I'm on my third tank of gas. I've only used 87 so far and can hear the pings at low RPM. My next fill up will be with 89 and I'll see if it was just my imagination.

I've been using 89 octane w/ 10% ethanol. I haven't had any issues so far.

This goes the same for my '99 Odyssey.

Unhappy New 05 Pinging on regular

New 05 Pilot is pinging with the first tank I put in of regular 87... Will try mid grade next time, hope it helps! I imagine the dealer put in premium so it wouldn't do it right away!!

I've been using regular (87 octane) and have not been able to detect any pinging as others have described.

With all of the electronics controls on the engine, I'm really surprised to hear others are noticing pinging.

I hear slight pinging with regular gas under heavy engine load such as going up a steep hill. The pinging is not there with premium fuel. I have been filling up with premium lately and noticed better acceleration performance and not as much downshifting. Anyone else experience this?

I've been using regular (87) and haven't had any pinging problems. I use Exxon gas, as they have the SpeedPass dongle for quicker transactions.

I had been using mid-grade for the first few tanks. I got in the habit of using mid-grade on my Dodge pickup, since the low grade caused the engine to knock.

Recently, I started filling up at Coscto, which only has low and high grade. Their high grade is less than I was paying for mid grade, so I have used that for the last couple of tanks.

2000 plus miles using only "regular" grade (87 octane around here). No pinging, or any other issues, at all. Averaging about 18 MPG with mostly "around town" and some intermittent highway driving.

I am wasting my money if I put mid or premium in my Pilot. It only recommends premium if you use it on very hilly terrain and/or haul a trailer. If I am hearing any pinging, I will take it to the dealer...

My other vehicle requires premium, and I can tell the difference if I put regular in.

Default Think Dealer used Premium...

I am on my second tank of gas with my 05 Pilot. Noticed a sharp decrease in acceleration after I put Regular gas, so much so that I had to check if my parking brake was on... Seems like there is such a vast difference in performance between Premium and Regular. Do not hear pinging, but will watch out in future...

Think I might be with the pinginig crowd but only if I use 86. Filled up at a sunoco who uses 86 not 87. Never done 86 before so I'll drive a couple of days and put some 87 in. Hate pinging.

I use the cheapest 87 I can find and I have not had 1 issue with pinging in my '05 EX-L Nav. Mpg stays about 17 around town. Done the ethanol blends as well with no trouble.
