Great! A pyramid scheme.
If points are here to stay, maybe their use could be limited to redeeming for things like bananna peels, empty bottles, roadkill, etc.

I just noticed the rate button at the bottom of each post, where you also find the edit and quote buttons. Has this 'rate' button always been there? Is it used as some type of multiplier when points are calculated?
I tried clicking on it but all it did was place an error at the bottom of the IE browser.

I noticed it too. I believe it came up when the whole "points" thing started. It doesn't work on our site but does on our sister site, acuramdx.org. When you click on the 'rate" button, you have the option of "approving" a post or "disapproving" post. The member who posted the post gains a point for each approval and loses one for disapprovals.

This information was stolen from the acuramdx.org site in this thread and was posted by admin...

Q: What are points and how are they being calculated?
A:

If you look closely at the top navigation buttons, you'll see a new button called "points store". This is a store where you can redeem your points toward "actions". An example of an action is "be able to change your username", or the more fun one - "change someone else's title". There are a few actions currently listed in the store, but I will be figuring out how to add my own custom actions. Shouldn't be too hard.

So how does one earn points, you ask? Well, here is a detailed list:

* 1 point for starting a new thread
* 1 point for posting a reply
* 50 points for referring a new member

* 10 points if a thread that you started got more than 5 replies
* 25 points if a thread that you started got more than 10 replies
* 75 points if a thread that you started got more than 20 replies
* 300 points if a thread that you started got more than 50 replies
* 700 points if a thread that you started got more than 100 replies

* 10 points if a thread that you started got more than 100 views
* 20 points if a thread that you started got more than 200 views
* 30 points if a thread that you started got more than 300 views
* 40 points if a thread that you started got more than 400 views
* 50 points if a thread that you started got more than 500 views

* 5 points if your post was rated with a 5.

To rate a post, click on the rate button at the bottom-right of the post. Be careful, the rating is not anonymous!

I've also have taken a liberty and donated a 1,000 posts to our top 5 posters, excluding our moderators.

Again, I will be working on new actions. What I have in mind is:
* for x number of points, you'll get @acuramdx.org email
* redeem your points at hondacuraworld.com
* etc.

All these "points" and I haven't yet seen that anyone here that needs any incentives to be useful, helpful, polite, informative, engaged, active, etc.

Let's hope they stay worthless. Nothing like watching what happens when people start getting rewarded for certain behaviors -- unintended consequences!!

calbear: That seems to be the consensus here...

...at the last tribal council thread, the votes were cast and it was determined that "points" was the weakest link and that was my final answer...

I agree. We've already had a fan vote, and soundly rejected points. How do we get admin's attention to fix this? Should I post my objection to it on my HondaPilot.org webspace?

(Dontcha hate that; people make a small contribution to the cause, then assume they have some input into the management of the operation. )

OK, so I just tried to "rate" sfhondapilot's post about the opt out of credit harassment and it won't let me do it. So I thought maybe it had to do with us being the old guys around here since we don't even collect points so I tried it on a new members post. Same result, nothing happens when I click on "rate". So what gives?
