Default How Do I...

kemosabe started this thread discussing how to change avatars, signatures, etc. Maybe we need to either expand that thread or start another one, in a similar vein, to discuss how do I add pictures to a post, use the search button, quote another post, add a link to another thread, and any other thing that you have a question about in using this site. (Or maybe there's another place that addresses this and I didn't do my due diligence.) Unless someone suggests otherwise, let's use this thread to ask those types of questions, and share the knowledge.

Default Adding pics to a post

There was a problem I recall having when I first tried adding an image to a post. I tend to preview a reply before I submit it. You can't preview an attached image because it doesn't get uploaded until you submit. If you preview a reply with an image, the path to the image is lost. You have to re-enter the path to the image before you submit it.

Default How do I...

Good idea jay!!! I also added a sticky to make it easier for new (and old) members to locate.

Default How do you...

Hi All,

How do you get the "Originally posted by " text to come up right above the quote you include in your post?

I understand a single quote, but how do you make multiple quotes in one reply?

Just use the same quote commands as the first quote just enter it in by hand. You can then copy and paste in what you wanted to post.

Default Annoying disappearance of threads

I've been finding disappearance of threads very annoying. My usual practice of visiting hondapilog.org is:

1. get to the home and check the number of new posts.
2. click the new posts link
3. click the yellow down arrow icon of the first thread to start reading from first unread article.
4. after finish reading all the articles come back to the top list.
5. enter the next thread by again clicking the yellow down arrow and repeat this process until there is no more unread threads

What annoys me is when I spend long enough time in one thread, for example composing a message for a post, the next time when I come back to the top list the thread list items disappear. I suppose the system recomputes the new posts based on the assumption that all threads are read sincce my last listing.

How can I get around this very annoying system behavior?

1. Type faster
2. Open the threads in a new window (SHIFT-click on the yellow down arrow) so the "new post" listing is maintained in the original window

The system is on a timer, as you've noticed, so if you spend "too much" time composing a reply (or even just leaving a thread sit on the screen) it assumes you've read everything on the new post listing. I don't recall the exact amount of time, but I do know that we've experimented with increasing it and decreasing it -- and the current setting seems the best compromise so you don't get stuff listed as new that really isn't.

I know on some other software packages the system tracks what you've *really* looked at, rather than just assuming based on a timer. I'd guess the next software upgrade/revision that vBulletin releases will have that sort of functionality.

I didn't know that!!!!!! Cool!!!! Thanks for the hint.

I just noticed that this little trick also works for the "Page # " as well.
