Default Error message

Alright I have a task for the new mods. I keep getting the following message and it seems to be more so at night.

"There seems to have been a slight problem with the HONDA PILOT .ORG database.
Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

We apologise for any inconvenience."

So what's the deal guys

This has been happening with some frequency - usually in the evenings. It may be more predominant when there are many people on line. The post will make the trip, but usually the counter will not change and usually the main index will not update to show who posted last.

I'm not sure if Admin has had any luck finding the source of the problem.

Officer FLPilot: There isn't anything that the Moderators can do about that error message, unfortunately... That is something only an Administrator (admin and TheWorm) can fix since it is likely a database or server snafu...

I get that message too and I used to just hit the back button on my browser and try again. Not too long ago I found out that often times if you do what says and hit the refresh button it works.

This problem is caused by too much traffic on the board for the server to handle. Admin is looking into finding a better place to host this site but he has his family issues at the moment and he is doing this for us pretty much out of the goodness of his heart.

Thanks guys for the info. Just for the record I did try hitting the refresh button on that page and nothing happened. So I hit the refresh button on the browser, still no luck. So I thought the same thing, just go back and send it again, nope. Just the same message. It's not a big deal, but sometimes when I hit the back button my entire message disappears (usually when I type for 15-20 minutes) so I then type my post again, but without as many words (Hmmm....maybe it's trying to tell me something). But I understand the whole busy server thing, the only thing I don't understand is that it was 12:31 AM and when I checked not many people were on. Also I understand Admin being busy with the family and I commend him and others here that make family first. I see way to many people letting their families slip and that's not a good thing

Again thanks Mods and florida_guy for the help.

I understand that the problems we're experiencing with H-P.org won't be cured until we're able to move to a new server (Admin, TheWorm: Here's hoping for progress on this issue). BUT ....for me, at least, it's getting to where it's almost too frustrating/time-consuming to use the site.

In addition to what FLPilot described above, I'm getting "This page cannot be displayed" even when trying to access "Get More" smilies! But, for me, the biggest problem is the interminable amount of time it takes to move between screens after nearly every click. I'm aware of the problems with incorrect numbers of posts, last poster, etc., showing up on the forum indexes....while this is misleading/confusing, it's something I can live with.

I don't notice any correlation between how the site is behaving and the number of members/guests on line, whether I'm accessing the site from home or at work, or really even the time of day.

Am I overreacting or misjudging the situation, or have others out there seen a significant turn for the worse in the last week or so? If it's just me, I'll chill and try to stop imagining things.

Yes Ziploc, I think many or seeing the same thing. Just overall sluggish - and I have not seen much (if any) difference from home to work or time of day.

I do think we probably will all have to be a little patient with all that is on Admin's plate right now.

OK, well there's two different issues being discussed here.

The one FLPilot mentions @ the top of the thread
Quote:
"There seems to have been a slight problem with the HONDA PILOT .ORG database.

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

was a result of a bad database/disk error on the hosting co's computer. This is the same issue that wrecks the postcounts and "find new posts" functionality. The repair of that has been automated so it should not be occuring. Or at least not for long periods of time if it does.

The timeout issue that Ziploc mentions is a different issue altogether, but it is also @ the hosting company's end. Similar timeout issues @ the X site (especially the past week).

There is a third issue not yet mentioned, which is a SQL error that states "too many connections". That one *is* load-related but it is because of throttling back of bandwidth at -- yes, you've guessed correctly -- the hosting co's end.

While this gets worked out, one thing that would be helpful is to identify the specific location of the issue when you have the timeout problems (the database/throttle stuff is logged). It will also help you confirm whether it's you, your ISP, the internet or the hosting provider. You can:

- Run TRACERT from an MSDOS prompt to see where the connection breaks down. Just look for where it says "request timed out" and post the domain/IP of whatever is one line up -- where the last good connection occured.

- Use http://visualroute.visualware.com/ which is basically a graphical version of TRACERT. It'll tell you exactly where and what the issue is.

Right now, the problem is on a "Hurricane Electric" server. The hosting company's:
Code:

Default OK Here's mine:

OK here is my tracert from work, which is where I keep getting these messages about "Failed to connect to Destination Address", and "server is busy" I am assuming again that it is the host machine and I should just put up with it until we move sites, Is that correct?

BTW; interesting how everyone and their brother seems to be going through Ashburn, VA, I hope thats not my house!!!

Thanks, TheWorm, for trying to explain the situation to some of us more "computer-challenged" out here. BTW--just for the record--re your below comment:

"There is a third issue not yet mentioned, which is a SQL error that states "too many connections". That one *is* load-related but it is because of throttling back of bandwidth at -- yes, you've guessed correctly -- the hosting co's end."

I got this message for the first time, yesterday.

Alloces, I also noticed Ashburn showing up a lot in the tracert. You were really in the middle of the action....for the moment, anyway (hee hee)!

So, it seems that the host's Hurricane Server isn't exactly blowing us away with its performance.

I realize that the root problem is attributable to the hosting company and know we have to be patient. I just had to vent a little after what was the worst day yet for me in trying to use the site.

Is this anything like "the worst day fishing is better than the best day working"???
