Question Search Feature

I have been trying to use the search feature of the board and no matter what I search on, I get hundreds of results where the majority do not contain the search words I entered.

Is this a bug in the software or a configuration problem?

Thanks,
Jeff

I find the same to be true. I have noticed that if you search for a key word that has been used recently it will show it, but if not it shows a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with your search word.

I have found this, too. I thought that perhaps It was bringing up all the seemingly unrelated threads because somewhere in that thread was my "target" word...

Have you tried adding "AND" between the keywords? This helps to filter out some results. Also, might want to try searching only the titles. With the multitude of threads, you'll find that some of the more experienced posters will provide links to earlier, applicable threads.

I agree...I've found the search feature so useless I hardly ever even try anymore.

And that's especially unfortunate given the CONSIDERABLE thread drift, chatter, cartoons, etc. you have to get through in order to find the actual information you're looking for.

Guys, I would greatly appreciate an example.

If anyone is interested, the way the search works is very simple. Whenever a new post is submitted, the engine indexes every word of the post, including its subject. When doing a search, if a word matches a word in a post, that post will be included into the result set. Priority is given to words that match the subject. The result is being displayed in a chronological order.

I entered the word wiper, it returned this:

http://honda-pilot.org/forums/search...by=&sortorder=

190 items, the first being about Cargo Trays, no word "wiper" anywhere to be seen.

An example: I just tried typing the word "Infinity" (as in speakers) and hit the search button. It gave me 135 topics of all sorts. I went into a couple of the ones that definitely looked off the mark...the word "Infinity" was nowhere to be found.

Interesting. I just did the "wiper" search with "show results as posts" (rather than threads) so the results would specifically show the individual posts with that word.

Not gonna go through all of them, but a number of the returned posts do not include that word at all.

Maybe the index needs a rebuild?

I was thinking that possibly the indexing was picking up our signature lines. Search for 'cargo tray' and you get every thread where someone has 'cargo tray' in their signature line.
???Yes, No???

No, I thought of that and looked when I tried mine. I even did a regular "Find" [Ctrl-F] on the pages. My word ("Infinity") was not to be found.

Hmmm... Just did a search on 190E as in 2greencars sig line. Got 6 threads - he'd posted in all of them.

That may well be true -- I didn't mean to say the search doesn't include the signature line...just saying that it's not the answer to the problem, because I get search results that don't include the searched word anywhere, including the signature line.

Default Try 'boat'

I have a boat and was looking for boat towing reviews/examples, etc... I search on 'boat' and recieve 246 hits.

"what would you do?"
"Problem with ordering sidestep..."
"Actual gas mileage"
"VIN Numbers"
"step bars group buy is on"

Very few of these threads actually contain the word 'boat' anywhere signature line or otherwise.

Even if I just search on one forum, search titles only, or display as posts, I get mostly non-matching results (although fewer if I just search titles).
