I did have a heck of a time getting to the gunk built up in the back but decided that as long as the filter's blocking the stuff, the effort was not worth trying to get it out. I used a vacuum thingy but that couldn't really reach. How did everyone else deal with this?

You are very welcome and I am glad the DIY helped you accomplish the task. I used a long vacuum tip that fit in the gap. Glad the DIY provided enough missions to help you.
