Default Cook County tax question...

I got this from a car dealer:

1. You'll save 0.5% on a sales tax if you live in Cook County. Because our dealership is located in Lake County, we're only required to collect 6.5% sales tax instead of 7.75%(Cook County). After you purchase, Cook County will mail you a bill to collect 0.75% Personal Use Tax which you have to pay on your own.

6.5% + 0.75% = 7.25% vs 7.75% + $15.00 (County Fee)

This is 0.5% lower in Sales Tax "

Is this true? Who is losing the 05% tax?

Default Re: Cook County tax question...

Ramirami, this sounds like "salesman math".

I'm working from memory, which is getting shorter and less reliable all the time, but I think that when we bought our Pilot in Cook County, we were charged the tax rate for the county that we live in rather than the county that we bought the vehicle in. So, we paid the McHenry County tax rate rather than the Cook County tax rate on our Pilot.

The scenario that the salesman is presenting to you sounds like bunk (technical term) and in this case the county (Cook) would lose .5% on the sale. As challenged as some county administrators are, I highly doubt that they could not find a way to charge you the full tax rate.

I agree....thats what I was wondering ...I dont see how 0.5% just falls through the crack...

I asked them for a breakdown of the price and they have shown 6.5% tax, even though I am in Cook county. Ofcourse I realize that when I get there they will say oops we charge you the cook county tax...or whatever..
