Question Posting Etiquette

I didn't see this mentioned in the site f.a.q.'s, but have seen it in other places. Posting in ALL CAPS is hard to read, considered to be a written form of shouting, and should be avoided unless the poster indeed INTENDED TO SHOUT!

I know some sites deteriorate into p*$$ing contests over this stuff, and wouldn't want to see that happen here.

Any other posting etiquette we should be reminded of?

Good topic

Posting in the correct forum (as did you) helps keep the site tidy and organized.

Cross-posting (duplicate posts in >1 forum) is bad form (and we will delete duplicates)

Using the search feature to find existing threads/topics and posting in those threads generally is preferable to starting a new one on the same subject.

Differing points-of-view are fine, but personal attacks on other members are not. (this rule does not apply to attacking trolls for sport).

I agree on the ALL CAPS. Extraordinarily difficult to read. OK for "shouting" or if you're like me and too lazy to bold stuff you want to emphasize, but otherwise please don't. Similarly, PARAGRAPHS are your friend.

I don't know if this is "etiquette," strictly speaking, but I really do appreciate reading posts that have been proofread/corrected so that the message is clear on first reading.

Note: Most HP.org members are pretty good about this--not so on some other boards I've joined.

I think quoting is important if you are specifically responding to another comment. In the case of this message I'm presenting a new idea so there is no need but if my post was...

"I agree!!"

There are several posts above this one that I could be agreeing to. I have seen times when a response could answer 2 or 3 questions in the thread above it. This is obviously confusing.

I just got that email too...maybe a good reason for why we type that way sometimes, and never notice it? Just a guess, on my part, but it is "amzanig"

Hate to say it but this is a perfect example of what I mentioned earlier in this thread. I have absolutely no idea which post you were responding too. Thanks for the example.

I was under the impression that Don/Brenda was contributing new stuff for the list, rather than replying to a specific post. Therefore, quoting anything wouldn't make sense -- it was a new idea and not a reply to any single prior post in particular.
