No monthly charge for GPS itself. If you want to update your unit's internal detail maps on an annual or lifetime basis there is a charge. But you don't have to update them. The maps that come with the unit will probably serve you well for at least a couple of years, and chances are, you will have moved on to a newer GPS by then anyway. Garmin's policy is if you purchase a new Garmin, and the maps are not the most current version when you register it, they will give you 30 days to download the current version for free. Also, if you have a traffic unit that does not include lifetime traffic when purchased, you could choose to subscribe to a traffic service, either annually or lifetime. Again, you don't have to subscribe. The GPS satellite signals always were, and continue to be free to the world. Thank you, USA!
