Default Poltergeist in my neighborhood!!! OMG!

So I was over at the neighbors last night, their boys were playing with mine, had a couple beers around a backyard campfire, and the one guy two doors down was telling me that he was digging in his yard doing some gardening (he just moved in about 6 months ago), and hit a hard stone.

He dug down, and it was something that looked like a pitchers mound. Kept digging and found that in his yard was buried a FRIGGIN GRAVESTONE

The guy had died at age 68, in August of 1850. I thought it was cool as heck (at first), and said "hey, I'll give you $20 for it". He said, sure!

But then I thought, OMG, there's gonna be haints around that headstone, and I don't need the haint of old Rufus White hangin around my house, Halloween a comin or not!

GAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! HOLY CRAP!!!! TWO DOORS DOWN FROM ME!!!! AAAHHHHHH!!!! Freaks me right out! If I was him, I'd be sellin in a HURRY!

And no I didn't buy it! But I had to share this freakish tale this morning with my friends here

Dollar to a donut, that is not the only grave in your neighborhood. Some developer built over a graveyard....what a surprise, not! Recourse could be difficult if you are the 2nd+ owner of your house...

An interesting sort-of post script to this......

My son was telling me that a friend of his a street away has two of them buried in his yard.....a man and a woman that died. They re-buried them in their yard because they just didn't want to know any more, and figured if they were there, they'd just rest in peace.

Now think about this......when you die and are buried, don't you "rent" the ground for 99 years? The guy on that stone died in 1850, and my house was built in 1951......and across the main road a couple blocks down, is one of the largest cemetaries in Buffalo.

Hm. Maybe I oughtta go out and get a ouija board for the next neighborhood suaret

Did you get a title search when you bought your house? You might be able to research the land's history from old county records or survey maps.

Check this out:
http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm

Some of the survey maps in the Buffalo area are dated 1901 and 1948.

The needpics icon isn't working...THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITHOUT PICS!

Did you try to google the name on the headstone? I know it's a little creepy, but I'm more intrigued than freaked out by stuff like this. I'd want to know how it happened, and if there was a history to the land sale, etc.

The squared off area shows where houses are now in my neighborhood. The green circle approximates where my neighbor lives, and the blue, the location of the other headstones.....this is the 1948 map.

BTW, that "99-year lease" thing we always hear about. That's a myth. It depends on local statute. I know of a few abandoned cemeteries (family plots, graveyards, etc.) in residential areas that go back at least to the early 19th century. They are taken over and preserved by the town. You can't develop them.

Towns are meant to maintain cemetaries, not sell them off to developers to build over........

When did you last check your closet Tim?

I'd be too used to them by now after almost 13 years living there.

N_Jay crashed at my domicile last time he was through, maybe he got "hainted"

Hey, there's no accounting for graft or corruption. Didn't they used have a bad habit of building on toxic waste sites in the Buffalo area?
