I gave up on shopping at the big box electronics stores. I try to do most of my "shopping" online as a number of the specials are available online. Wasn't worth the time and aggravation to try to get any of the doorbusters.

It's a sport -- American retail at its finest.

I spend Thanksgiving in Roanoke, VA each year with my wife's family, and I always go out on Black Friday with her cousins (my wife is smart and stays in bed). Even if I don't need anything for myself, I go and help her cousins buy for their kids. I love it! We map everything out the night before and plan who is going where and when. Then we hit the stores bright and early to rack up the deals. It's amazing to see everyone out and about so early, so intent on getting their treasures.

I started my career working in corporate marketing for a large retailer, so I guess that's why I have such a fondness for participating in the consumer side of Black Friday.

No Thanksgiving for the Germans = No "Black Friday"

We may check out some of the online stuff, but will travelling in Berlin for the weekend, so who knows. The economy on this side of the pond is in the crapper too, so there may be some deals to be had, especially with the Euro down.

Regardless, happy shopping!

One of Walmart employee was stepped to death when door was opened for shoppers early this morning.

NEW YORK – A worker was killed in the crush Friday after a throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains burst through the doors at a suburban Wal-Mart, authorities said.

At least four other people were injured, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island was closed.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. The man's name was not released and the cause of death was not immediately known.

A police statement said shortly after the store's 5 a.m. opening time, shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground."

A metal portion of the door was crumpled like an accordion.

Shoppers around the country lined up early outside stores in the annual bargain hunting ritual known as Black Friday. Many stores open early and stay open late, and some of the most dramatic bargains are available in limited quantities.

Among the bargains offered by Wal-Mart for Friday were Samsung 50-inch high definition Plasma TVs for less than $800.

Tragic, for the employee and the others hurt in the melee.

God bless.

I follow with another post out of respect to the injured....

Living in far west Houston, Texas, I saw and experienced nothing but courtesy and respect for each other and employees of the store. I accidentally bump you, say sorry and excuse me and get the same in return.

Local Walmart is exactly 1 mile from my house. Open 24/7 if I recall...

We arrive to a full parking lot at 4:50 AM and walk in. There are lines for certain high dollar items, (electronics) and are discreetly watched over by law enforcement officers. I heard there was one scuffle between 2 women about 4:30am, they were in the tv line.

The officer that broke up the scuffle apparently lost his cell phone in the process of keeping the peace . I was around the area at approximately 6:30 am when he was asking a senior manager of the Walmart if anyone had found his phone. LSS- ( long story short )... it was gone.

Can you imagine the scumbag that eventually found it might discover that he 'found' a lost cell phone..... and it belonged to a cop? F*ck the scumbag that picked it up and didn't turn it in to mgmt!

If I find a lost purse, phone, or wallet, I try to do the right thing.... Find the original owner, or turn it into trustworthy management.

God is my witness....

After reading the post a few above this one, I realized how much we rely on peace officers to keep us safe. My wife and I brought our 8 yr old son, who had a blast shopping, to Walmart at 5 am on black Friday. I would kill myself if we were in a stampede and he were killed by people storming the store to buy a plasma tv.

Believe me, we drove the parking lot, looking into the Walmart to see if it was out of control. It wasn't....

A lot of people find charities and reasons to 'give' during the holiday season. I went up to the Walmart at 2 pm after "getting the picture" to see if the officer was still there. I had a $10 bill to help him get another cell phone. He had already left. Apparently, he is a local patrol (although I haven't seen him b4 ) and is stopping by the walmart regularly.

In my opinion, it is a small amount and a small gesture of goodwill. Our cops in Houston/Katy are not crooked and have earned my respect.

It is my holiday mission to find out who the officer was and personally give him the $10 bucks toward his cell phone, lost in a scuffle b4 I even arrived.

I've seen and heard of stories where cops have called their loved ones after being injured or eventually killed in the line of duty. A last call to a family member could be monumental.........

End of story, Happy Holidays.... Happy Thanksgiving.... Merry Christmas... none of the "PC" correct stuff. I tell it like it is.

Absolutely not my day to shop..... this year there will be Black Weeks before the end of the year and January 2009 which will be 40-70% off. That way you don't risk your life for a plasma/ lcd TV, video game/console, or any of a thousand. other things that you could buy at any other time without life ending stress. (Local Best But had people camping out starting Tuesday to be first in line for the Black Friday sales...it's now a family Thanksgiving tradition according to one shopper ...what an idiotic thing for a family tradition)

Sorry Dear....Your insert your excuse here (gift was out of stock/got lost in shipping, didn't have the right color/size) and won't be here until January.

Merry ..XXX...whatever you call XXX these days to be PC.
