Default Interesting queston

Given that the average weight of an adult American has increases 24 pounds since 1960, how much of our annual gasoline use can be attributed to moving that weight?

You'd have to make an assumption first regarding the population. Would you use the same number as in 1960 or today's number? You'd probably also want to make sure you take into account the number of miles traveled per person.

I'm sure someone could do the calculations to figure out a rough estimate. Not me though .

I think a greater percentage of those fat people spend a greater percentage of time on the couch holding the TV remote, so the miles per person offsets the weight increase.

Also, we no longer cruise up and down main Street picking up chicks like we used to...

According to my formula, Q=A((TO-TI)/(L/K + 1/h)) , I agree with your professor in saying it has cost us approximately $1B

To answer the original question.

Taking a few items as assumptions

#1 Pilot weighs Apprx 4500lbs
#2 Average Fuel economy is 18mpg

Then

It takes 1 gallon to move 4500lbs 18miles,

So...

1 quart will move 1125 lbs
1 pint will move 281.25lbs
1 cup will move 140.625 lbs
and 1 ounce will move 17.57lbs

So it takes approximately 1.5 ounces of fuel to move 25.57 lbs over 18 miles.

If that's not scientific then nothing is.

Knowing Dr. McKenzie, I would hazard the guess the he was more "scientific.
