Default sq footage

does anyone know how to measure sq footage? I know you basically multiply length by width, but what if you have a trianglular shape.

I'm planning on having wooden floors put in and I wanted to know the sq ft so that when I have companies do my floors, I'll know if they are trying to BS me.

i attached my 1st floor layout, the part shaded in gray is the area I want done.

Assume you are referring to the bar area...

Imagine it as a box, measure the x and y, multiply and divide by 2...

Also remember that since it isn't a rectangular area, that there will be some waste with material, and not "neat". I used to figure about 5% at least, maybe more if there we lots of "ins and outs".

Remember, too, that they (or you) will be buying material in boxes, so if you need 205 sf of flooring (including waste factor) and boxes contain 20 sf of material, they (or you) will have to buy 220 sf of flooring........or make a run to sLowes 5 minutes before they close to find they've sold out the last box of your particular flooring and won't be getting in any more for 2 weeks, and all you need is 2 strips to finish.....and return to the wife giving you the hairy eyeball for not "planning ahead".

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.....

HA! I've covered my tracks well, grasshoppa! Though, my last project of installing some chair rail, I got my "top" line confused as a "bottom" line, and put up one length before I realized what I'd done....and I was hoping not to have to paint.....

Like Norm Abram says "Measure twice, cut once."

according to my wife I "measure once, cut 3 times, throw out piece, run to Lowes, buy 2 extra, cut again, curse 3 times, then use plenty of wood putty, and have an extra that will wind up in garage".
