Now there is an innovative use for ethanol.

Maybe the ultimate engine is dual-direct-inject(TM), with direct inject fuel and direct inject ethanol cooling, each timed and for maximum fuel efficiency. (Maybe I should have accepted that offer to go to MIT?)

I'm somewhat skeptical, from an economic standpoint, about ethanol from corn on a large scale (i.e., everyone using E85). Where's all this corn supposed to come from? Most of the beef raised in the US are raised on corn (at least the last few months of their short-@$$-lives). Have you seen the price of beef the past few year's? Wanna see it quadruple again? Poultry and pork too, and who knows what else in the food supply, as a result of diverting the supply toward energy production. Sure, the farmers love the idea but they couldn't possibly meet demand. Instead of importing oil from a bunch of terrorists, we'll be importing corn from a bunch of communists.

The MIT thing seems like a fairly simple incremental solution, based on proven technologies, that could be economically viable for several decades.

Well "somewhat sceptical" but you way more convinced that I am!

It will be interesting to see how much ethanol is imported from Brazil in the coming years. Brazil makes ethanol from sugarcane and switch grass.

And they use all they make and it is subsidized.

There is nothing new at all in that article. Saab's been turbocharging for decades. Bentley Supercharged vehicles in the 1920s to win Le Mans.

Even Honda is becoming a Turbo fan with the RDX.

Diesels the world over run on Turbos and direct injection as well.

Summary: yawn

I think the "new" part of the article is the combination of ethanol with turbochargers.

Ethanol performance in cold weather is suspect and it will not solve our decency on foreign oil.
