Default 9-11 and the WTC

I had a meeting downtown NYC yesterday.
Since I came into the Newark airport, the fastest way was the PATH train to the WTC terminal.

For those who don't know, the station is (was) in the sub 5 level of the WTC.

The new terminal is still at the same level. the back side of the terminal is open to the construction.

I have wanted to get to Lower Manhattan for the last few years, but in my only other trip to NYC, I did not have time to get down there.

I did not consider that my fist view would be AT ground zero.
Having nodded off on the train, to wake to that view is an overwhelming experience.

It was a horrible day and a horrible experience. I now work right across the river in Jersey City, and I am reminded of it everyday as if it was yesterday. Weird but true.

I am looking forward to the Freedom tower though, and the memorial.
To me its a giant 'Nothing will stop us' symbol to the garbage that did it.

My wife (then girlfriend) used to live in NJ (96 to 98). Whenever I visited her we used to take the path to the city... I have'nt been back since 9/11.. but when we go back it will be some experience...

Soon the building will be under construction. It will still have impact, but not like opening your eyes to being IN a 5 story hole.

The street level is very different. There is this space, in a city that has almost no open space. It has a "misplaced feel", it is (or at least for me) much easier to absorb.

I will be in NYC for work a lot over the next year or two.

The new #7 is a beautiful building. I also await the tower.

We could see all the smoke from the Turnpike and my wife worked with some of the families as a grief counselor. She's a professional therapist and used to work in a local hospice and I volunteered with some of the kids. Just heart breaking.

N_Jay, you should stop by to grill steaks and drink Chateuneuf du Pape! I'd like to hear some of your theories on particle physics.

No, a co worker for six years who shone sunshine all around her.

Her memorial service was tougher than my Dad's. A whole team of people who worked with her at the same place were brought together again. We hugged and cried.

I gave up on particle physics in favor of things that impact my life in meaningful ways.

But if you want, we can invite the CEO of the Center for Science and the Media.
http://scienceandmedia.org/ and http://www.sciencentral.com/inc/

Steaks and wine are always a good idea, however, I favor a good old vine Zin.

I don't know, if all the electrons in your body started flying out of control, that might have a significant impact on your life. You handle the invitations and let me know the date. We'll work around your schedule.

Default sad

On my way home tonight i stopped for milk and ran into one of my good friends that i lost that day Mom. She still cries when she sees me. I still get choked up also.
I personally knew 14 people that perished that day, some of the roughest funerals and ceremonies i ever attended. I also feel lucky bc four other people that worked in tower 1 or 2 that we know very well all ran late that day. One forgot to feed their dog and turned around and was 30 minutes late that worked on the 55th floor.... One had to go get a blood test bc she was waiting for a pregnancy test, she worked on the 93rd.... One spilt a glass of OJ on her skirt and decided to take the day off...

I was 3 blocks away near the NYSE when it all happened. I thought to myself..'i just lost 20 people i know'

horrible

Don't worry, nature will keep them all in order, even if we don't fully understand the process.

We just kicked off the project, so I don't have the meeting schedule, but I expect to be in the city once or twice a month for a year, and if we get the extension, then it could run a few years after that.
