When I saw the title of this thread, I expected it to be about that gap between the driver's seat and the center console.

That gap may not have an accretion disk, but it's capable of pulling in massive amounts of material (coins, pens, phones, etc...).

I never understood why light, if it has no mass, is affected by gravitational forces within and around a black hole. Therefore I started to believe that either light does have mass, ie, even infinitesmally small photons, like electrons, did weigh something or that gravitational force was somehow unified with subatomic forces & light energy. Then I got interested in girls.

robrecht, I KNEW we were kindred spirits! I've long had some of the same questions about the mass (or lack thereof) of photons and gravity - that was the one point made in Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" that didn't seem to make sense. I also disagree with the point in the demonstration about the ship appearing to stop before entering the black hole. I believe it would red shift and fade from sight.

Asked one of my scientist colleagues this morning and he tried to explain it away in terms of gravity actually bending space (& time) but I think that still sort of begs the question. My theories usually make more sense after a couple of glasses of wine!

I knew it wouldn't be long before N_Jay stuck his two cents in to another discussion of something he doesn't understand!

Relax - so was that!

There are several things I disagree with the web developers flash demo, but I know I don't know astrophysics and subatomic particle dynamics well enough to espouse on the topic.

I think I would look to science sites for my science information.

Sometimes I wonder if N_jay posts just to exceed 10,000.

Humor is certainly better than lame attempts at insults, so good job, N_Jay! It's quite true that I never engage in partisan political discussions unless my liberal Democrat older brother is pouring the bourbon freely and we decide to gang up on my reactionary Republican younger brother. He doesn't drink, the poor guy.

It's not that he doesn't understand, Bill, it's just that his opinions are based on masculine reason and homophobic FACTS, whereas yours are based on emotionalism and girly feelings. When will you finally acknowledge this?

Bill, do you think N_Jay is trying to imply that you're gay??? I think he also tried to imply that I was gay once because I was drinking Chardonnay at the time. We're in good company, even if we're not fulfilling N_Jay's romantic fantasies!

Not that there's anything wrong with that - except from my wife's perspective!

Got to wonder about two guys who get into a "Gay" discussion in a "Black Hole" thread!
