Hi there - I see that there was a lengthy thread a year ago about installing the Graco Safeseat (and other carseats) in the Honda Pilot. We are getting ready to do that this weekend, with a baby due in one month. There were several posters that suggested that having the carseat in the middle of the second row (without the latch) was safer that having the carseat outboard on either side with the latch. I have read the opposite on other sites and just wondered if someone could point me to the true rule? I understand the side curtain airbags on the outboard sides are not a problem for a carseat. And I understand that the weight of the Graco Safeseat makes it actually hard to get in and out of in the middle seat. I would love some more thoughts on this if someone could share experiences. Thanks.

Even though the outside in somes eyes is less safe because of it's proximity to the sides in a side impact, I belive that the latch system secures the seat much more securely than the shoulder belt and the tether. You can also look at it this way. If you take into consideration all of the different angles your vehicle could be struck from, the possibilty of taking a hit in the door is percentage wise less. I say, use the outer seats with the latch system, That's what I've used with both my kids.

Congrats on the about to come baby.
When our kids were in car seats, it was the outboard seats only. The biggest safety feature on any car is the er nut behind the wheel..... |

The SafeSeat should be a snap to install anywhere. We always recommend the center, but of course it comes down to the parent's lifestyle and preference. While side impacts aren't as common as frontal or rear impacts, they're much more deadly. Just thought I'd throw that out there. So long as the car seat is properly installed and the baby is properly installed in the car seat you don't have much to worry about regardless of which seating position you use.
I put a SafeSeat in an MDX on Saturday--seatbelt install took about ten seconds and the LATCH install (final install since it was outboard) took about twenty. Just watch the angle and put the handle down while in the car. If your Pilot has leather, get some rubberized shelf liner and put a small piece of it underneath the car seat base. Easy peasy. |
