Even for a Bimmer that is a rip.

1997 Subaru Outback Wagon 5speed (50/50 all wheel drive).
1. All wheel drive 2. At least as big as the Outback 3. Capable of towing at least 2000 lbs. 4. front side airbags. 5. Decent fuel economy 6. Room for Bubba in the back (93lb. male doberman) My wife was going to replace her Outback with another Outback. When we started the research we realized the only way to get side airbags in the Outback was by buying a limited with the 2 sunroof thing going on. It cuts down rear headroom by about 2 1/2" and severely impares the big dog's ability to stand in the rear of the wagon. My wife would have none of that so we went looking. We looked at the Highlander and we were both unimpressed . She complained the front seats were too short (she is 5'3') but she noticed it. We talked about looking at the MB. Then I found the Honda website for the new Pilot. Since her 97 Outback replaced her 1991 Accord (the oldest son needed it more than she did) which had replaced her 1986 Prelude we went to a dealer in mid-June who had one to look at (not to buy). We looked, we drove, we went home and decided that yes, we could both live with the automatic 5 speed transmission. We hadn't owned an automatic in 26 years but with one 5 speed still in the family (2001 Subaru Forester) we would give it a go. Very good vehicle. Happy with decision. Tows like a champ. Rides like a dream. Good long distance vehicle. Love the low revs at high speeds. #09131 SS EX |

The Pilot will be replacing my 1987 VW Golf ( 2 door, non A/C, 183,000 miles, 5 speed manual trans.).
I love my VW, but we are in need of more room since our baby was born. Neither my wife nor I will drive a minivan, so a midsize SUV is what we need. (My wife drives the 97 CRV, but with the baby it just isn't big enough for long trips). We really liked the Highlander (better interior in my opinion), but we will be getting the Pilot due to its size. |

'92 Explorer XLT with 117,000 miles, 2 transmission rebuilds, a/c system rebuild. I bought it when it was just 3 years old for about $13,000 and, at the time, it was quite a vehicle for me. It was the biggest thing I had ever bought, the most expensive thing I had ever bought, and the only thing with leather I had ever bought. It bounced all over the road (and still does). Nonetheless, it was a good vehicle for me. I certainly got my money's worth out of it, having bought it used and having kept it for over 7 years.
Needless to say, I've made a big improvement in my "quality of drive" with the Pilot.

Our SS Pilot EX replaced a 1993 Honda Civic EX with 162,000 miles on it. It was a great car and we would have kept it if we had a three car garage.
Needed a bigger vehicle for 2 kids and something to be able to haul stuff around and pick up things. Got tired of paying for delivery or borrowing a family members pickup. The Pilot is the perfect fit for us at the exact time we were seriously looking to replace the Civic.

Replaced a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder.
Primary consideration was seating for more than 5. Other major considerations were safety and reliability.

I currently have a Mercury Villager with 130,000 miles on it. Its been great up to now, but we have been suffering from unreliability. Wife has been stranded twice in the last 4 month. My father purchased this car brand new in 1993. One of the first Villagers on the road. When my parents passed away, we took it over. Occasionally we find a little something from them hidden away somewhere in the car, or a little toy from when my kids were infants and they were with their grandparents.
The car means a lot to us and we feel bad trading it away for the Pilot, but the safety and reliabilty that the Pilot will provide means more. I had a chance to get a Black Pilot the other day. We passed on it since the Sagebrush is scheduled to arrive the end of August. |

I replaced a 2001 Ford F150 SuperCrew 4x4.
It was great for vacations, but tough as a daily driver. 12 mpg city, what a gas hog! We're also done with our major landscaping projects at home, so I no longer need the ability to haul that type of material. It was leased. I've purchased the Pilot, and plan to keep it for much longer than 2 years! |

I replaced a 99 Durango. I previously had an Explorer. The Pilot is much more enjoyable to drive than either of them. The Durango's breaks are scary, the gas milage is terrible, I don't tow and I only go big rock hopping on foot. The Durgango's ride deteriorated over time. I found it to be too harsh. The stopping distance and feel of the brakes left me feeling uneasy. Due to a few key things prematurly wearing out in the Durange, I had the feeling that the Durango was going to cost more over the long haul. The Pilot is great for tooling around town and getting Kayaks into access spots that a van or a car can't manage. My seven year old will learn to drive in my Pilot (when she's 16 of course).

'Had to rid ourselves of the Chrysler beast. It was a decent vehicle, great design, nice features, dog-slow, built like doo-doo. When it started avoiding first gear, we started shopping!
'Primary features we like are seating capacity, power, (relative) fuel economy (minivan went from about 19-20 mpg to 17 without first gear), handling, ride height, stereo/sub, seats... did I mention power? Having some trouble getting used to not having caverns of space under the benchseats. Where do you put a pizza box when you have 7 in the car? |
