Default should I get a TomTom Nav?

My sister and brother both have navigation units and its pretty handy, so I'm thinking about getting one. I think they both have Tomtoms, should I go for that or do you have any suggestions?

I've found Garmins have much more accurate estimated times to destination. TomToms way over estimate how long a drive will take.

I have 2 TomToms and 1 Garmin and use the TomTom more often...all in what you get used to probably due to my Garmin having a smaller screen.

+4 Garmin

Walmart online sell reconditioned units, great value and some come with lifetime map updates.

I've only used Garmins.
Regardless of brand, I would recommend getting one with at least a 4 inch if not more screen size. Bigger really makes it easier to read. i do particularly like Garmin's split screen as you approach an exit. That and lifetime updates.

Whatever you get, make sure that you get one that has lifetime map updates. Otherwise, the update cost makes it better to buy a new device every few years.

I have a Tom Tom top model ( has maps of Europe as well) which I bought years ago when they were bulky and expensive. A smaller chain was going out of business so the price was right since I waited till the last minute to buy. I love the features and it hands down beats what I have in the Pilot. That being said, I always- and maybe because I don't use it often, I have a paper clip or small nail duct taped to the top to use to reset the damn-thing if it's sat for awhile.

One day I might be able to justify the cost of those new-fangled phones with the built-in navigation with bluetooth to use with my Pilot. ;-) The old Tom Tom is something I fly with to use in any vehicle or take on vacation when someone else is driving. Sure miss the fights with my girlfriends and wife when I wouldn't stop and ask for directions as long as I had gas in the tank. ;-)

Which reminds me. The ability to add maps via a memory chip on the Garmins has proven invaluable for traveling over seas.

Another vote for Garmin. If you get the bean-bag friction mount you can turn it sideways, put two of the leaves up and it sits nicely in the cubby. You just need something about 2 inches tall to prop up the front.
