Default Anyone buy a car in FL and register in another state?

There seem to be some weird rules in FL about titles, insurance and temporary plates.

I am hoping to buy a car in FL and drive it back to IL.

I think I have the money all figured out, but now the dealer is saying he needs to pay an agent $250 to handle the title transfer because he can't.

I expected to just get FL temps and drive home.

Seems like I might be able to transfer my old IL plates to the car on-line, once the paperwork is done.
Might add a day to my trip.

The FL temp seems to need FL insurance.

And I won't have a title since it is going to the bank.

Hmmm, maybe I can just buy the car for cash (on my credit card) and then "refinance" it when I get home?

IL SOS will allow you to complete the Illinois registration transfer and title forms on-line but you still need to take all the paperwork into an SOS facility to finalize it and make any applicable payment of fees and sales tax.
Electronic Registration and Title

Out of state purchaser in Florida would need to show proof of insurance from their home state when applying for the 30 day temporary tag.
"A Florida insurance exception may apply if out-of-state insurance is provided"

It seems like you can do it on-line as long as you bring everything in within 7 days.

I guess I am going to be on the phone figuring all this out tomorrow, or I can buy the one that just showed up locally, have a car with less miles but less options, and not quite as desirable a color.

I hate hard choices.

How much would you take off a 4 year old car for being in IL winters as opposed to FL? (Salt and all)

That could be a toss up...IL winters & road salt VS Florida sun and sea salt...

Not all Fla cars are by the sea. But most snow state autos are exposed to snow melt salts every year, several times a year.

You have spotted a key point. You have several days to inform your insurance co of a vehicle purchase.
Registering the car in Illinois will only take bill of sale, FL title signed over to you and whatever IL form is needed to satisfy the RMV.
Your insurance agent will likely do all that hard work for you. Assuming you are transferring the Pilot's plates to your new car.

Gotta give some love to those UV rays and bright sun....probably why some Fl drivers park on the side of the road during a heavy rain...sun dried wiper blades along with other parts (vehicluar and human)lol

Doesn't a layer of squashed love bugs provide some UV protection?
