Default Wife's accident

Everyone is fine thankfully...

Classic case of a car two up is making a left hand turn, the person in front of her didn't notice until the last minute so jammed on the brakes and my wife couldn't stop in time. Luckily no one was hurt and the kids weren't in the car. A couple interesting things though are that A)no airbag deployed and B)nearly $6000 in damages.

Kind of a bummer they didn't total it because we're planning on buying a new one. Two kids, 85k miles, and 6.5 years; it's served us well but time for an upgrade. It's back from the shop now and we're looking at trading it in for a '12 Touring.

That doesn't look like a very bad hit at all. That's why the airbags didn't deploy. Anything under around 15 mph and the airbags won't deploy.

What is surprising is you say that's a $6000 repair!!! WOW! That's NUTS! Looks like it just needs a bumper, hood, and a fender or two. The headlights didn't even break! You should get a second estimate!

I would make a good use of 6k to have it repair and a brand new paint job with some new accessories bolts on, retrofit + new foglight? find yourself your own favorite body shop and deal with them, specially with bolts on will be combine with all the repair which will be very cheap, don't let your insurance's body shop to take all your money just to return it to original looks, when you can get much more for the price...

Glad no one was hurt! You'd be surprised how fast repair costs add up. I can see how that would equal $6000 in repairs, you never know what could of been damaged under the hood. The headlights may not look broken, but the brackets that hold them in place could be, which would mean they need replacing. You just never know. It also adds a lot of extra costs when the body shops have to order new parts instead of using parts from other wrecked vehicles. As for the airbags, it all depends on how fast you decelerate. When I wrecked my 2002 CRV I was going 45-50 mph, but I hit the median cable barriers with the whole passenger side of the car. So, that plus the give of the cables resulted in a "slow" enough deceleration that no airbags deployed.

The shop said that a big chunk of money was the mount(s) for the radiator which apparently need to be welded? In any event it's all back together now. Time to trade it in.
