That Stinks, don't want to drift to much here but if you are getting a comparable replacement vehicle through insurance you should find one with a almost new timing belt like yours or make the seller of the vehicle give you money for the job. Technically, insurance is supposed to provide a vehicle that is in equal condition as the loss. Good insurers will understand this concept, not fight you, and comply.

If you actually think about it, you aren't saving money. You are prematurely changing the timing belt, which has a manual life of 100k miles. So, technically, it's as if you went to 100k miles with your standard belt, and paid 500 to only get 50k miles out of your second belt. That's a rip off!

I wish you were the State Farm adjuster. They took away the rental after a week and after 3 weeks of fighting with them almost daily I gave up. I took the 10K which was about $2,500 short of replacement value. I found a 07 Pilot with Nav and my wife loves it. But fighting with the insurance company was the most miserable thing I have ever dealt with.

Default Timing Belt Question

I have a 2006 Pilot with 85,000 miles. I'm starting to get nervous about the timing belt because I tow a 14 foot trailer with two four wheelers (3,000 lbs.)about a dozen or so times a year; even in hilly areas. I bought this car used with 30,000 miles. I change the tranny fluid every 30,000 per the manual.

I had heard the newer belts were supposed to last till about 105,000 miles. I expected a little less for trailer towing. I just saw the recommendation in the manual to change it at 60,000 if you tow frequently. How do they define frequently?

Should I do ahead and change the belt? I was thinking about 90,000 miles. Could I remove one of the top covers and inspect the belt? Can I depend on the maintenance minder to tell me when the belt is ready to be changed?

I just don't want to get stranded. What do yall think?

Water pump? The honda dealer said a water pump would last 200,000? Should I do it too?

Judgment call. Tradeoff between modest expense and slight risk of failure (big expense). 90K sounds good to me.

The belt will look just fine right up to the time it fails. There is no visual inspection you can do to confirm belt life.

I was wondering about this myself. Is it hard-wired to just flip the code at 105K or does it adjust the number up/down based on operating conditions?

I would. You're in there and the cost is only incrementally higher. If it were my car, I'd also check the valve clearance and replace the cam chain tensioner, main serpentine belt, and all rubber hoses.

Thanks for the advise. I called 3 Honda Dealerships today. All 3 dealerships say the water pump will last 210,000 miles. I'm old school; I will probably go ahead and have it done; it makes sense and isn't that much more. All 3 dealers told me the maintenance minder has no ability to monitor belt wear; it basically works off of how often you reset the maintenance minder. He said if you reset it every 3000 miles it would probably tell you to replace the timing belt at 60,000 miles. I'm going to have the work done at 90,000 miles; just in case something happens before my 100,000 warranty runs out.

$750 = drive belt, a/c belt, belt and tensioner, and adjust the valves.

Is this honda engine non-interference? (when the belt breaks)

It is interference. Belt breaks = empty wallet.....................

I like their precision. Not 200K, not 225K, but 210K. I think it would better simply to think of it as their saying the water pumps will go 2x the belts replacement interval, whatever you decide is appropriate for that. Maybe they do go this long with little risk of failure, but I know it is often a weak area on high-mileage vehicles.

I agree with Whizmo. If the engine/drive train is working normally, having this major service interval work done early is unnecessary. As he said, when someone is messing around with a perfectly good engine, they can screw up something.

Sorry for the hijack

My wife 2002 accord is at 105,000 miles. I just changed the spark plugs. Now have questions about timing belt. I am going to call dealers around to give me a quotes.

What should I need to know to ask them?

Well, first you need to know if it's a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder. 4-cylinder has two timing belts. What is the trim level of your Accord?

TYpically they will replace #8, 13, 14 & 15.

Part Detail

That is about $181 in parts from a discount online dealer. The best bet would be to get a Gates Timing belt kit "TCKWP244" from RockAuto.com for $80. They include the OEM belt (they make the Honda belt) and OEM tensioner bearings. Then they also include a Gates brand water pump. So after that all you will need is 2 gallons of Honda's blue coolant (~$35). Call around and shop for labor/install prices and pick a shop that you trust. You are always aloud to bring your own parts in.

Gates TCKWP244

94eg, do you meant 7,8,13,14? The reason I asked because looked at the picture of Gates's kit, I don't see #15 but #7 instead.

Thanks
