These two codes just lit up a few days ago. I reset the MIL and they come back after driving a few miles. I've seen postings about one of the codes coming on but not both at the same time. Has anyone seen this before? I'm skeptical of 2 cats failing at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My Pilot has 166,000 miles on it, the valves were adjusted within the last 6,000 miles and the T-belt was replaced withing the last 3,000 miles.

Could be a number of things. P0420 Error Code: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
If you are only now getting around to doing the timing belt, which should have been done at 105k, what other maintenance eg spark plugs are still to be done?

At 166,000 it is not uncommon to need to replace the cats.
If you have a scanner with live data capabilities, you can read the oxygen sensor values in real time and you will probably see the upstream and down stream sensors reading nearly identical, which is why you are getting the 0420 and 0430 codes. If there aren't any exhaust leaks, you are most likely looking at catalytic convertor replacement.

The plugs were changed at the same time as the valve adjustment. We bought the Pilot used and did not know when exactly the t-belt was replaced. I felt more comfortable putting the new T-belt water pump sooner than later.

After 150K or so, how long your cats remain good is questionable. You are running on borrowed time at that point.
At 150K, I got a P0420 and when I cleared it, it came back in a few days. I bit the bullet and replaced the rear bank cat and the CEL never came back on after that. P0420 is for the rear bank cat (closest to firewall) and P0430 is for the front one (closest to radiator). The third cat on the exhaust pipe doesn't throw CELs. Good luck and let us know how things turn out... |

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found this searching for a similar question.
Isn't the pilot covered under an 8 year federal emissions warranty, like all cars? Should not the cat replacement have been covered? I know we had an xterra in a similar situation (just at the 8 year mark) that needed the cats replaced. Dealer was all too happy to do it for $1200. Mentioned the federal emissions warranty and they claimed they never heard of it. A call to Nissan Corporate revealed that yes, the emissions warranty is 8 years and they are required to cover the cats. Free parts and labor is great! |

Hmm. Interesting stuff. I looked up the federal regulation and it seems there are 3 components covered for 8yrs or 80k miles:
http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt There are three specified major emission control components, covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995 and newer vehicles: * Catalytic converters. * The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU). * The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD). |
