Default Use my Pilot to remove shrubs?

Is this a bad idea? I have some old, tired shrubs in front of my house that need to be removed. I'm certain their roots are strong and deep. Has anyone used their Pilot to aid in the removal (ie: pulling) their shrubs out?

I don't want to harm the tranny or put too much strain on the vehicle. I have one payment left!! (it's an 06)

Sounds like fun but you'd be best off digging them out and cutting the roots.

I think it is a great idea. Here are some other ideas to try out when you get bored.

Don't use your Pilot. Go to the cheapest car rental place in the area and rent a full size pickup for the day for $50. Then pull away.

I helped a friend remove a couple of small damaged ornamental trees that way - we used his beater pickup though.

The key is that you have to be able to secure something to the exposed portion of the the shrub that will stay attached and also not have the shrub break. If there are just small week branches, they will give before the roots do.

I see rear glass replacement in your future. Friend of mine tried this with his F250 V10 and the auto 4x4 got stuck. I pulled them out with my 1991 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 like butter. He now owns a Toyota Tacoma, been telling him to get an import for sometime.

Your pilot would be able to do it. I wouldnt do it with a nice truck. I pulled some out with my tacoma and when i pulled the shrub out, the shrub came flying at my grill and the rope flying over the hood. Put the best bet to get rid of shrubs is to dig them up as much as possible then pull.

I wouldn't do it. If you do, make sure to drape something heavy over the strap before you start pulling. This way if the strap breaks or breaks free, it will be less likely to recoil up and back.

Unless you can get the strap around or into the root ball, you may just rip the shrub off of the root ball.

When I did this one summer with a small general contractor, we used a chain and what I call a T-bar. I couldn't find it online - maybe the guy made it himself. It's simply two pieces of angle iron welded together in a 'T'. Wrap one end of the chain around the shrub at the ground, put the cross bar of the Tbar on the ground, run the chain up and over the T-bar, then to the truck. The Tbar helps transfer the horizontal pulling of the truck to vertical pulling on the shrub.
