Default Redrock Pearl gave her life to protect ours!

While returning from a ski trip to Bear Valley, I hit some ice on the roadway and ended up colliding with a tree and rolling over twice. All five occupants of the vehicle were able to get out by themselves. My wife suffered the worst of the injuries, with 4 broken ribs and a lacerated kidney. My worst physical injury was to my hand, which sustained a very large burn from the steering wheel air bag. My two teenage sons and thier friend in the second row were not hurt.

As you can see by the pictures in the link below, the car was a total loss. I am extremely impressed with how well the Pilot protected us. I truly believe if this same accident had happened to us in a car similar to what our parents drove 25 years ago, that my wife and I would not have survived.

Please take care of yourselves.

Happy to see that everyone made it out okay. I did something similar to you several weeks ago in a CRV, except I collided with the cable barriers in the median after spinning several times in traffic. Though my car didn't look as bad as yours, it was still a total loss. My 03 Pilot is what replaced the CRV, I wanted my "bubble" so to speak.

PS. Did the side airbags deploy?

No ceiling dropping airbags on the 03-05. Airbags in the front seats.

You can see the stress/force of the impact by the way the roof on the drivers side is rippled.

Like the chrome strips on the radiator grill.

So now what are you going to buy

I know there is not drop-down side airbags, I was talking about the one in the sides of the seats.

Thanks to all the well wishers. Now that a month has passed, we are substantially back to our normal lives.

The 2008 EXL Navi replaced the 2005 EXL. The insurance settlement covered about 2/3 of the "out-the door" cost of the 2008 after my $1,000 deductible.

Rocky - I have a spare set of the Chrome Grill strips in my garage somewhere. If you would like to have them, PM me your address and I will send them to you (once I find them)

Glad everyone made it out alive. Maybe a dumb question but do you think that all terrain tires or more aggressive tread would have made a difference? Years ago I also hit some ice going to Big Bear and ran my folk's 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 off the road and hit a huge boulder, smashing the front end. Luckily it was on the side with the mountain going up and we did not roll. However, I was driving on almost bald tires with no chains, which was crazy stupid. I always wondered if new tires woudl ahve made any difference.

IMO the only tire that may of helped would be a dedicated winter tire, but that's a long shot.

Wow, that was quite an accident. Glad everyone is ok! That is comforting to know that it held up so well in a roll over.

agreed. the passenger compartment is very square still, despite a rollover. good to see that the roof isnt V'ed. this is one of the big reasons why i bought a pilot. excellent crash rating. glad everyone is ok!

Glad everyone survived with minimal injury.
It appears the front and drivers side edge of the roof line took the brunt of the impact. Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like the luggage rack crossbars made it through without deformation. Thankfully though the passenger safety cage construction and airbags sure did their jobs and apparently passenger restraint belts were in use too.
