Ok everyone, I need some input. A little of topic, but here goes. I have been a part of these forums since 2003 and the people in these forums are so friendly and helpful - much more than other forums I participate in. That being said, I recently inherited a 1998 corvette and posted some questions on my C5 corvette forum and didn't get a single response. So, I am hoping that some of my fellow piloteers can give me some input. I recently purchased a battery tender to place on my corvette during the winter and have a few questions:
1. Do I need to unhook my battery and take it out to apply the battery tender (as the instructions state) or can I just hook it right up to the battery while it's still connected within the vehicle? 2. The instructions clearly state to make sure you don't charge the battery in a "enclosed area". Well, assuming I leave my battery in the vehicle with the hood barely propped open and covered with a car cover - is that considered an "enclosed area". Thanks in advance everyone! |

I'd take the battery out.

No brainier to buy that one and I can say with out a doubt that it is 100% safe to charge in the car with the battery hooked up. If you have a cigarette lighter socket that is always on you can just plug it in there and not even need to touch the battery at all. Last edited by carguy07; 11-15-2010 at 09:03 PM. |

I'm going to say that you "should" be safe to charge it in the car as well. I have seen a case though (with a different charger) that overcharged the battery with it in the vehicle and it spilled acid all over. That was with an older charger though, so I think you should be pretty safe to let it stay in the car as long as you leave the hood open (vented.)

If you have other options as well, try to really make things work out by finding other brands or parts of it in the market today. Brands like ctek and others, plus some other parts like tender, clamps and the like would compensate your needs in this one.

I bought one from Harbor Freight that is hard wired to the battery terminals. I installed it on my truck as I don't drive it all the time and use it for trickle charging during the winter months. It's nice to run an extension cord to the truck and charge it without leaving the hood open or pulling the battery.
