Just bought a used 2006 EX-L. Subwoofer is shot and sounds terrible. Needs to be replaced. I figured I would upgrade a few other things while I was at it. Here is my plan. I hoping some other Pilot owners can give me some hints, tips, suggestions if this is all feasible.
First off, my vehicle is a 2006 EX-L. It does not have the RES option. Vehicle has steering wheel controls. Everything is currently stock. I would like to leave the stock head unit in place and add the USA Spec box everyone is talking about to add an ipod. I would like to replace the component speakers in the front and the rear speakers. I obviously need to replace the subwoofer as well. My main question is this. Do I (or can I) add an amp to the stock head unit if I replace all the speakers? Almost all the subwoofers I looked at at Crutchfield would require me to add an amp. If I am leaving the stock head unit will I notice a difference if I add an amp to the new speakers? Has anyone replaced all the speakers and the subwoofer and not added an amp? How does it sound? If anyone has any suggestions for speakers and a subwoofer that sound good and are an easy install in the Pilot, I would love to hear about them.

Usually all factory speakers sound terrible - how do you know the subwoofer is shot?
As far as speakers quite a few choices can shop at crutchfield.com to see which ones fit and then look elsewhere for better prices, etc... I just replaced the 4 main speakers, disconnected the tweeters, and left the subwoofer intact (may upgrade in the future)- sound is definitely better than stock speakers. 2006 EX-L Stereo 2006 ex Speaker upgrade |

Anytime I play anything with bass I get an awful noise. I am just assuming its the subwoofer.

Living in Charlottesville has its advantages as I can visit Crutchfield in person. After thinking this over I am leaning towards just disconnecting the sub, replacing all 4 speakers, and adding an amp. If I add an amp I will get plenty of bass from the new speakers. Still haven't pulled the trigger on this plan yet but it seems like a good upgrade without breaking the bank.
