Default Where to repair CD player 2004 Pilot?

My 2004 Pilot's CD player skips and sometimes doesn't play at all - at other times plays just fine. Local dealer doesn't repair but would remove and ship off for a fix - I think $500 was the estimate. Any alternatives/experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd go aftermarket where you can get iPod, usb, dvd, navigation, bluetooth, etc -- whatever you want.

If you really want to stick with OEM though, you might be able to find one on ebay. Might be cheaper than getting yours fixed.

Replacing it should be trivial if you want to retain the stock unit. Aftermarket options are great, but you will lose the steering wheel controls unless you get an adapter. My first inclination would be to look on eBay and see what you can find. Here's an example:

2003-2004-2005 03-05 Honda Pilot STEREO CD PLAYER RADIO: eBay Motors (item 180506093282 end time Nov-06-10 15:58:50 PDT)

Lots of salvage yards are parting out cars and selling them online. It should be pretty easy to find a reasonable priced replacement.

Another option might be to remove the unit from the dash, pop the top and blow it out with some compressed air. I would probably give that a shot before you start looking at replacements.

OK, that one apparently has issues. Check this one:

Also have you tried one of those cd lens cleaner things you can buy at a 99 cents store?

I would advise against them. The brushes have a tendency to come out of alignment or break off. I've also seen them damage the laser head in my professional life. Compressed air is all that's needed generally since the heads don't make contact with the disc like they do in other older media.
