Several Q's - Head unit install and keeping trap door pocket

I've got an '04 LX 4WD. Pretty much stock all around. However, I would like to put a new head into it. I've done several radio upgrades in different vehicles and was wondering if there was a site with pictures of how it should go. I know I'll need a wiring harness adapter and such.

I would like a Kenwood head since I've used them for years and I'm pretty familiar with their operation. My wife is asking for one with an iPod input and I'm sure it can be arranged. I want one so I can plug my Android phone in via a headphone jack so I can run Pandora through it.

Question 2:

I've searched around for install kits and have seen a bunch and they all raise the same question. Do I need one? I'd prefer to keep that little pocket under the radio since it has that neat little door. Just a preference.
